University of Maryland Medical Center Overview
The University of Maryland Medical System was created in 1984 when the state-owned University Hospital became a private, not-for-profit organization. It has evolved into a six-hospital system with academic, community and specialty service missions reaching every part of the state and beyond.
The Medical System is a national and regional referral center for trauma, cancer care, neurocare, cardiac care, women's and children's health and physical rehabilitation. It also has one of the world's largest kidney transplant programs, as well as scores of other programs that improve the physical and mental health of thousands of people daily.
With our long-time partner, the University of Maryland School of Medicine, we've become one of the nation's finest academic medical centers. Our collaborative research efforts have produced many cutting-edge advances in prevention, diagnosis and treatment, advances that improve the health and well-being of the patients we serve. We also have trained the majority of Maryland's physicians and other health care professionals.
The University of Maryland Medical System is the fourth largest private employer in the Baltimore metropolitan area and one of the top 20 employers in the state of Maryland. The Medical System employs 10,737 people, 99 percent of whom are Maryland residents.
As a leading academic medical center, we take the continuing education and professional growth of our employees seriously. To that end, we offer our employees outstanding educational benefits for themselves and their families. We also provide them the chance to work in a patient-centered environment in which new technologies and cutting-edge therapies allow us to provide the best possible care for the people of Maryland and beyond.
UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND MEDICAL CENTER BENEFITS
UMMC Benefits are available to all employees who are scheduled to work forty hours or more biweekly in a regular status. Benefit costs are either paid by UMMS and/or shared with the employee as described in the following paragraphs. Health and dental benefits become effective on the first of the month, following thirty days after the first day of work. Enrollment forms must be received by the 31st day of employment or enrollment cannot be processed until the next open enrollment period.
HEALTH CARE PLANS
UMMS offers five health plan options from which you may choose and the flexibility to waive coverage if you have insurance elsewhere. All of the plans are contributory for all levels of coverage.
University Network Quality Care is a triple option plan that allows you to self refer to any provider. The provider you select determines your level of coverage. The managed care options are FreeState Network and Kaiser Permanente. For many services, the level of coverage is 100%, after a small co-payment. In a managed care option, you must use the services, physicians and sites as directed by the plan. The FreeState Opt-Out or PHN health plans allow you to select an out-of-network physician, but you may share more of the cost.
