Motorists Mutual Insurance Company was established in 1928. The company is a major regional property and casualty insurer. Motorists' personal lines, commercial lines and life insurance products are sold by a network of more than 2,800 agents working through approximately 600 independent agencies in a market of more than 32 million people. Motorists Life Insurance Company was formed in 1965. MICO Insurance Company, which provides coverage for select nonstandard automobile risks, was established in 1982.

American Hardware Mutual was established in 1899 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. A leading commercial lines insurer, American Hardware markets commercial insurance products through employed sales representatives in 35 states. The company affiliated with Motorists Mutual in May 1993 and maintains a corporate office in Minnetonka, Minnesota.

Iowa Mutual Insurance Company, founded in 1900 in DeWitt Iowa, markets personal and commercial lines of insurance in Iowa, Illinois and Nebraska through independent agents. Iowa Mutual affiliated with The Motorists Insurance Group in November 2003 and maintains a corporate office in DeWitt.

Wilson Mutual Insurance Company, established in 1872, is a property and casualty insurer in Sheboygan, Wisconsin that affiliated with the group in 2001. The company markets its insurance products through independent agents in Wisconsin.
