Over 100 years ago, when Dr. Arthur E. Spohn began caring for Corpus Christi's 7,000 residents, he saw patients in their homes and in a makeshift operating room in the Incarnate Word Convent. There was no hospital of any kind.
After eight years of fund raising, the two-story Spohn Sanitarium was erected on North Beach, just 100 yards from the bay. At Dr. Spohn's request, Mother Madeleine Chollet, of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word of San Antonio, agreed to staff and run the sanitarium, provided the building would always be dedicated to health care.
CHRISTUS Spohn Health System, a part of CHRISTUS Health, now consists of four hospitals and 9 clinics. We are one of the region's largest private employers with 4,500 dedicated employees, more than 700 physicians and more than 500 community volunteers. We continue to adapt and change to meet the needs of the people we serve.
CHRISTUS Spohn Health System has grown—not to be bigger, but to be better. Our size now allows treatment of more South Texans more efficiently and effectively. That is what must always occur in a way that is in keeping with the mission, vision and values of our faith-based ministry.
