Rooted in a tradition of community service and clinical excellence, Sutter Health is a unique organization blending a heritage of excellence with leading-edge innovation and technology to create an integrated health care network for the 21st century.

Sutter Health was created through the January 1996 merger of Sacramento - based Sutter Health and Bay Area - based California Healthcare System. Yet the founding systems and their affiliates possess rich histories, stretching from the early, rugged days of California medicine into the modern era of HMOs, PPOs and primary care physicians.

The foundation of Sutter Health began taking shape well over 100 years ago as independent hospitals opened in numerous Northern California cities to meet the health care needs of their local communities.

The oldest hospital in the Sutter Health family is the earliest ancestor of what is now known as California Pacific Medical Center, established in San Francisco in 1856 to serve the scores of settlers swept up by California's "gold fever."

Other health care facilities destined to become part of the Sutter Health network opened over the next century. All were created through the grass-roots efforts of local community members looking to better the health and well-being of their growing cities and towns.

While many Sutter Health affiliates enjoy a long history, the birth of our modern-day health care network largely occurred within the past two decades.

Sutter Health

In 1981, Sutter Community Hospitals-the governing organization of Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento-formed Sutter Health in an effort to diversify its operations. Over the next 15 years as managed care emerged and the need for efficiency grew, Sutter matured into an integrated regional not-for-profit health care system. By 1995, the Sutter network had widened to include 18 hospitals, seven medical foundations (physician organizations), numerous outpatient care centers throughout Northern California, and a close relationship with Sutter Independent Physicians, an independent practice association serving the greater Sacramento region.

California Healthcare System

Meanwhile, in the Bay Area, by 1986, California Healthcare System came together with the goal of helping its hospitals and associated physician groups deliver health care services of the highest quality while also addressing the key issue of cost effectiveness. The founding hospital partners of CHS were Pacific Presbyterian Medical Center in San Francisco, Mills-Peninsula Hospital in San Mateo and Marin General Hospital in Greenbrae. Berkeley-based Alta Bates Corporation joined the system 1992, the same year that saw the creation of California Pacific Medical Center, the result of a merger of Pacific Presbyterian and Children's Hospital of San Francisco.

In January 1996, Sutter Health and California Healthcare System merged their well-respected health care networks in a landmark agreement designed to create a new organization well-positioned to meet Northern California's care needs in a fast-changing, challenging environment.
