At W. L. Gore & Associates, our products are designed to be the highest quality in their class and revolutionary in their effect.
The company began in 1958, when Bill and Vieve Gore set out to explore opportunities for fluorocarbon polymers, especially polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). Within the first twelve years, Gore had wire and cables on the moon and operations worldwide.
Today, our enterprise is comprised of approximately 6,000 associates in 45 locations around the world. Annual revenues top $1.2 billion. Our fluoropolymer products provide innovative solutions throughout industry, in next-generation electronics, for medical implants, and with high-performance fabrics. We've repeatedly been named among the '100 Best Companies to Work for in America,' and our culture is a model for contemporary organizations seeking growth by unleashing creativity and fostering team-work.
While we may be best known for our GORE-TEX® fabrics, all our products are distinguished in their markets. Our technologies and fluoropolymer expertise are unsurpassed.
We create next generation cable assemblies and components for the electronics industry, set the standard for outerwear comfort and protection, solve difficult industrial problems with innovative materials and technology, and Gore medical products work in harmony with the body's own tissues to restore normal body function.
We take our reputation for product leadership seriously, continually delivering new products and better solutions to the marketplaces of the world.
Culture
How we work sets us apart. We encourage hands-on innovation, involving those closest to a project in decision making. Teams organize around opportunities and leaders emerge.
Our founder, Bill Gore created a flat lattice organization. There are no chains of command nor pre-determined channels of communication. Instead, we communicate directly with each other and are accountable to fellow members of our multi-disciplined teams.
How does all this happen? Associates (not employees) are hired for general work areas. With the guidance of their sponsors (not bosses) and a growing understanding of opportunities and team objectives, associates commit to projects that match their skills. Everyone can quickly earn the credibility to define and drive projects. Sponsors help associates chart a course in the organization that will offer personal fulfillment while maximizing their contribution to the enterprise. Leaders may be appointed, but are defined by 'followership.' More often, leaders emerge naturally by demonstrating special knowledge, skill, or experience that advances a business objective.
Associates are commited to four basic guiding principles articulated by Bill Gore:
fairness to each other and everyone with whom we come in contact;
freedom to encourage, help, and allow other associates to grow in knowledge, skill, and scope of responsibility;
the ability to make one's own commitments and keep them; and
consultation with other associates before undertaking actions that could impact the reputation of the company by hitting it 'below the waterline.'
Benefits
Gore offers a flexible benefits or cafeteria plan designed to allow each associate to build his or her own benefit package.
To ensure that our associates continue to receive a high-quality benefits program, we compare it periodically to other companies' offerings. In a recent comparison with other leading employers (including IBM, 3M, DuPont, Hewlett-Packard, and others) by consultant Hewitt Associates, Gore ranked in the top two - not only because Gore pays a high percentage of the purchase price for benefits, but because the package itself is highly valuable.
Core benefits are basic plans and services provided by Gore to all eligible associates.

Medical Products
For more than 27 years, W. L. Gore & Associates, Medical Products Division, has provided surgeons and patients with a wide range of healing solutions, including synthetic blood vessels and patches for soft tissue regeneration, and surgical sutures for use in vascular, cardiac, general surgery and orthopedic procedures. Our medical products work in harmony with the body's own tissues to restore normal functions. This capability facilitates less invasive procedures and offers new solutions to medical challenges.
Electronic Products
Gore's unique expertise in polymeric dielectrics has lead to the development of a broad array of high-performance signal transmission products.
Gore’s electronic product portfolio includes cables, assemblies, printed wiring board materials, computer chip components, conductive interface products, and shielding gaskets. This diversity of products translates into chip-to-chip signal integrity: from the point of a signal’s origin to its destination, Gore manufactures products that enable signals to travel at high speed with great fidelity and stability.
Industrial Products
Leveraging its unique expertise in fluoropolymer technology, Gore offers a wide variety of industrial products designed to solve problems in a diverse array of applications. Our commercial portfolio is complemented by the work of specialized application engineering teams, who custom-design components for equipment manufacturers and large scale end-use customers. From filter bags for pollution control to viral barriers for medical devices, from sealants for chemical manufacturing to membrane electrode assemblies for fuel cells, our products deliver the best possible combination of value and performance in use.
Fabrics
Thin, lightweight, durable Gore membranes provide the keys to the performance of Gore fabrics. Gore combines these very uniform barriers with contamination-resistant coatings. The resulting composites may be tailored to achieve varying degrees of windproofness, resistance to penetration by liquids, and moisture vapor permeability or “breathability.”
Gore complements its expertise in membrane technology with in-depth knowledge of fabric performance and polymer technology. Ongoing field and laboratory tests -- combined with the development of advanced adhesives, coatings, fabric finishes and seam-sealing materials -- ensure durable, high-performance garments and footwear.
