Job Description
Director of Pharmacy
POSITION SUMMARY:
- Under administrative direction, assesses, plans develops, implements, and evaluates pharmacy services with 24 - hr responsibility for total department management.
- Controls, monitors, and manages all professional, technical, and financial aspects of department operations.
- Directs, establishes, and plans the overall policies and goals for a hospital's pharmacy services.
- Maintains contact with other department heads, medical staff, and nursing staff to determine needs, resolve problems, improve processes and promote effective drug therapy.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
- Thorough knowledge of rules, regulations, policies, and laws pertaining to the preparation, storage, procurement use, and disposal of medications in the practice of Pharmacy for the State of Washington.
- Knowledge of and ability to apply new medications and technology

ACCOUNTABILITIES AND ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Develops and implements departmental goals and objectives that are aligned with and support the Medical Center's goals and objectives; actively supports Harrison and its mission by modeling cooperative and collaborative working relationships with others in the hospital and within the community.
- Provides direction for all activities in the Pharmacy Department to ensure a safe and appropriate environment for patients and staff; ensures all departmental areas are in compliance with all health and safety standards for cleanliness and operational ability of all items and equipment; ensures environmental conditions including temperature, ventilation and lighting provide a comfortable and safe working environment.
- Ensures patient's pharmaceutical needs are effectively met by establishing staffing mix, policies, procedures, standards, and objectives for the provision of services; implements creative staffing solutions during unforeseen circumstances.
- Oversees and directs the recruiting, selection and orientation of all pharmacy and support staff. Coaches and advises supervisors and staff; serves as a coach for all supervisors to assist them to build managerial and leadership skills.
- Collaborates with physicians, other departments, and nursing staff to determine needs, resolve problems, improve processes and promote effective drug therapy; ensures patient safety by managing medication use processes including prescribing, dispensing, administering, and monitoring patient outcomes. Engages departmental staff by involving them in decisions that affect their work, treats employees respectfully, demonstrates integrity and follows through on commitments; collaboratively manages the department by seeking and sharing information with managers and staff.
- Recommends changes; initiates innovations in existing services/operations and proposes new services/operations that meet the needs of our customers. Ensures departmental and organizational compliance with all regulations and standards; formulates and makes recommendations regarding changes in practice to ensure compliance. Ensures all staff members are compliant with Joint Commission Standards and medical center requirements regarding age-specific care and treatment.
- Directs the annual planning and budgeting process to ensure it is accomplished within timelines and guidelines; competes for and deploys resources appropriately; meets budget while maintaining quality or justifies variances to manager’s satisfaction; ensures all reports are completed on time and correctly to support operational needs of the organization.
- Directs and delegates control of materials, supplies and equipment; ensures availability for operation of the department. Evaluates need for new or different items; coordinates purchases and needs to provide optimum care within budgetary allowances; develops cost cutting techniques where possible.
- Works to lower supply/procedure costs through collaboration with physicians and staff. Plans and provides for mandatory education requirement as well as continuing educational needs of the department; oversees or provides in-service on all new policies, procedures, products, and equipment. Maintains and upgrades professional and technical competency in area of practice through a variety of methods and documents on Individual Education Record. Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION REQUIRED:
- Pharmacy degree or MS Pharmacy or B.S. Pharmacy with equivalent experience, MBA desirable but not required or a combination of education and directly related work experience.
LICENSE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:
- Must have a current Washington State Pharmacist License and maintain BCLS certification.
SPECIALIZED TRAINING REQUIRED: None CONTINUING EDUCATION & COMPETENCY REQUIREMENTS:
- Yearly requirement for 15 hours of ACPE (Accredited College of Pharmacy education) continuing education;
- Annual mandated in-services as required for management staff Age Specific continuing competency requirements:
- Yearly re-assessment of pharmaceutical skills for pediatric, geriatric, renal, and chronic pain patients
EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
- Five years recent hospital pharmacy supervisory experience.
