Pre-Op/Post-Op Manager, Surgical Services
Summary of Pre-Op/Post-Op Manager, Surgical Services
POSITION SUMMARY:
- Manages the coordination of patient care, supervision of personnel and direction of administrative activities in Pre-Op and PACU.
- Promotes team concepts and harmony within the unit and throughout the hospital.
- Also functions as a PACU Nurse when required.
KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of surgical patients, operating room and skill in operating emergency equipment Knowledge of state and federal regulations Knowledge of PACU/Surgery/Anesthesia procedures
- Knowledge of and ability to apply effective management techniques
- Skill in conceptual and nursing administration, knowledge of hospital, philosophy, policies and resources

ENVIRONMENTAL / JOB CONDITIONS:
- Exposure to Hazardous Chemicals or Substances and/or Infection: Risk of exposure to infectious disease during all patient contacts; Risk of exposure to hazardous chemical and substances
- Exposure to Bloodborne Pathogens: Risk of exposure to bloodborne pathogens during all patient contacts
- Personal Protective Equipment Required: Gowns, gloves, masks, goggles/mask shields, shoe covers/booties, lead protection, protective eyewear for lasers.
ACCOUNTABILITIES AND ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Reviews scheduled procedures to anticipate labor needs; develops and carries out staffing plan to support the needs of the unit; makes changes to plan when necessary to accommodate patient load
- Participates in the selection of staff for the unit and participates in orienting new staff members to the department to ensure they have information necessary to function effectively in surgical services; provides regular feedback, completes annual performance evaluation process and ensures appropriate documentation; promotes, encourages and empowers team members
- Oversees and coordinates delivery of individualized nursing care PACU; initiates and facilitates changes as indicated to improve either delivery of care or resource utilization; develops and delivers in-service and other training for OR staff Monitors productivity levels, resource use, and staff absenteeism and turnover rates; provides opportunities for cross-training of staff in other surgical services areas
- Evaluates and reviews staff work performance requiring intervention; ensures all documentation is current and follows prescribed policies and procedures; counsels employees on performance matters; ensures specialty medical staff is informed of all staff changes
- Facilitates and promotes effective communication, teamwork, and cooperation within the OR and surgical services department; attends a variety of staff and team meetings and in-services to provide input and serve as department resource
- Ensures an environment of comfort, safety and competence for patient and families; ensures preventive maintenance programs are in place and operational
- Ensures unit policies and procedures are updated to meet patient needs; ensures unit complies with regulatory requirements
- Monitors, evaluates, and recommends solutions to correct inter and intra-department problems/issues; ensures department quality control standards are maintained.
- Models and facilitates continuous quality improvement within the department
- Assists the Director in the development of short and long term goals and objectives for the department; participates in gathering data and information for the QA program; participates and/or leads QA programs in the OR.
- Gives input to specialty leaders regarding in-services, equipment in-servicing/ new procedures, etc.; coordinates with physicians and other members of the healthcare team to provide quality patient care
- Monitors work environment to promote safety; troubleshoots, communicates and works quickly to correct unsafe conditions and equipment.
- When delivering direct patient care, ensures care appropriate to ages of patients cared for/served by the department; obtains and interprets information in terms of patient needs; applies knowledge of growth and development appropriate for the age groups cared for/served; understands the range of educational treatment needs of the patients care for/served in the specific age groups; meets annual in-service requirement for education case studies regarding age appropriate care for the patients in the specified age groups

EDUCATION REQUIRED:
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing, BSN degree preferred or a combination of education and directly related work experience.

LICENSE / CERTIFICATION / REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:
- Current Registered Nursing Licensure in the State of Washington BLS and ACLS certified
CONTINUING EDUCATION & COMPETENCY REQUIREMENTS:
- Continuing education and/or licensing requirements: Re-licensure per Washington State Board of Registered Nursing; Mandatory Educational offerings per Harrison Hospital policy
- Age Specific continuing competency requirements: Pediatric Post-anesthesia patient care competency; Adult Post-anesthesia patient care competency; Geriatric Post-anesthesia patient care competency
EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
- Two to four years recent PACU nursing experience
