Job Description

Provost Academy Colorado is an online public charter high school that will open for the 2010-2011 school year. Provost Academy Colorado’s mission is to offer a world class online education to all high school students in Colorado. By using the most current technologies, customized curriculum, and a distinctive focus on science and mathematics as a gateway to overall student success, Provost Academy will individualize the learning experience for its students and leave them uniquely prepared for 21st century careers or post-secondary education.

The Director of Instruction reports to the Executive Director and assists in managing the school and its instructional resources. The Director of Instruction is responsible for interviewing and recommending hires of all instructional staff to the Executive Director and Board of Directors. S/he is responsible for teacher evaluations and coordinating all professional development and professional staff induction programs mandated by the state. The Director of Instruction is also responsible for ensuring that all instructional staff hold and maintain appropriate certifications. The Director of Instruction supervises the Learning Community staff, including advisors, technical support and community administrative personnel. The work hours for the Director of Instruction will be primarily from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., and evening and weekend hours will also be required in order to communicate with families and staff members on an as-needed basis.

Main Responsibilities:

• Oversee implementation of an induction program
• Identify mentors and lead teachers within each instructional department and ensure compliance with state mentor program requirements
• Monitor staff through the Provost Marks and GradeBook Systems to ensure quality instruction and student achievement
• Lead professional development activities and coordinate programs that increase staff expertise
• Work with Learning Community Leaders to identify problems and issues and generate solutions
• Make final decisions on technology issues related to the instruction of students
• Support the Executive Director with development and implementation of the mission and vision of the school
• Make recommendations and decisions in the selection and hiring of personnel based on ability, qualifications, past performance and school needs
• Ensure compliance with all federal and state regulations and policies for teacher certification and highly qualified requirements under No Child Left Behind
• Facilitate communication and build professional relationships with the Board of Directors through phone calls, email, memos, meeting agendas, reports, presentations, and handout materials
• Lead staff meetings and communicate frequently with staff members
• Demonstrate knowledge of state standards, testing requirements and graduation requirements across core content and electives
• Implement knowledge of online instructional strategies
• Exhibit knowledge of school management, operation and law
• Understand the teaching and learning process
• Maintain current knowledge regarding Colorado teacher certification and highly qualified requirements and definitions
• Participate in professional activities and organizations
• Commit to the use of cutting-edge technology
• Build community by contributing to school message boards, newsletter and events
• Communicate with colleagues and supervisors on a regular basis
• Maintain confidentiality as required by the company and by law


Job Requirements


• Colorado Principal or Administrator License
• Minimum five years teaching experience
• Masters Degree in Education Technology or Instructional Design highly preferred
• Experience teaching or participating in an e-learning/online learning course preferred
• Strong written and verbal skills
• Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook
• Proficiency with multimedia communication tools, such as discussion boards, web logs, email, instant messaging and audio podcasts
• Ability and availability to travel within the state
• High degree of flexibility
• Demonstrated ability to thrive in a fast-paced work environment
