Position Summary
The Senior Test Engineer will perform system testing of sustaining releases of our BIG-IP® product which include both hardware and software components. This includes creating test plans for large projects based on product documentation and functional specifications; creating, documenting, and using test procedures, test cases, software test tools, and test automation; executing tests; and documenting test results.
Responsibilities
- Designing and setting up a test network (including clients, servers, switches, routers and dedicated test equipment)
- Designing, implementing, and using tools to pass traffic across the network
- Validating proper switching / routing / packet transformation is occurring
- Troubleshooting problems which might be occurring in the: Physical network hardware; In a packet handling ASIC or FPGA; In firmware; In software running on embedded or general purpose CPU's in our products; In an external client, server, or network device.
- Working with other testers, developers, or professional services engineers to qualify and reproduce a problem.
Requirements
- Bachelor degree in computer/engineering related field or equivalent work experience
- At least six years of testing experience.
- Solid knowledge of IP networking: routing, switching, and network standards from layer 1 on up through the transport and applications layers.
- Strong, demonstrable knowledge of HTTP is required.
- Thorough knowledge of IP application, routing, and management protocols as well as Layer 2 protocols.
- Expert UNIX knowledge including kernel configuration, network configuration & troubleshooting, and system / network administration skills.
- Demonstrated excellent troubleshooting skills and ability to pick up new technologies easily and quickly.
- Scripting experience in at least one language from the set: C, C++, Java, Perl, or Python.
- Experience using traffic generation products (e.g. Spirent or Ixia)
- Demonstrated ability to perform cross team product integration testing with local and remote teams.
- Experience with network troubleshooting/management and protocol analysis tools.
- Familiar with software and hardware test methodology and defect tracking systems.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Windows environment .
- Excellent technical writing and communications skills.
- Physical ability to perform all of the essential functions of the job.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
Duties are performed in an office environment while sitting at a desk or computer table. Duties require the ability to utilize a computer keyboard, communicate over the telephone, and read printed material. Duties may require the ability to travel via automobile or airplane, and may require being on call periodically and working outside normal working hours (evenings and weekends).
