Job Description

Position Summary:  Supervise the activities in the claims department.  Oversee processing of insurance claims for personal, property, or casualty loss based on coverage, claim evaluation, and verifiable loss. 

 

Key Responsibilities:

 

Relying on extensive experience and judgment, the Claims Manager is responsible for accomplishing the following responsibilities.  This position has substantial latitude for actions or decisions made without review and acts independently under general direction using a variety of the field’s concepts, practices, and procedures.

 

  • Supervise the day to day processing of claims in accordance with performance and quality standards. 
  • Approve claims above the authority given to staff members.
  • May be responsible for reviewing and processing highly complex claims.
  • Recommend and present to manager proposed settlement terms for claims of a complex nature that are in excess of the stated authority amount for the position.
  • Develop and maintain processes and procedures for departmental use.
  • Communicate with insured and other appropriate parties on litigation or liability issues.
  • Establish, monitor, and report on performance metrics around speed, accuracy, and quality of results.
  • Select, lead, direct, train, and develop staff in the department.
  • Responsible for review and evaluation of the performance of personnel.
  • Develop project plans, establish timelines, and set goals for assigned projects.
  • Assign resources to projects as needed.
  • Meet commitments on project deadlines.
  • Develop a strong customer focus and high service level relationship with brokers, team members and other departments.
  • Write clear and user-friendly manuals to describe process, data flow, and operating procedures.
  • Perform work thoroughly in a cost efficient manner and at a high productivity level.
  • Utilize company resources effectively.
  • Comply with all company policies and procedures.
  • Ensure SOX and internal business controls compliance.
  • Identify, analyze, and manage liability issues.

 


Job Requirements 

Position Knowledge, Skills, and Requirements:


Education

 

  • Associate’s degree in Business Management or a related field or the equivalent education and/or experience

Experience

 

  • Minimum of five years of relevant and progressive experience in the insurance industry
  • Minimum of two years of supervisory experience
  • Must have proven experience in claims processing
  • Understanding of the insurance business terminology

Working Conditions and Physical Demands:

 

  • Overtime hours may be required to fulfill job responsibilities
  • Limited travel may be required
  • Sitting for extended periods of time
  • Limited lifting up to five pounds may be required
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, and other devices
  • Close vision and ability to adjust focus; required to read a computer screen
