About Us

"We've been around. We'll be around. You can count on us"

Volunteers of America is a national, nonprofit, faith-based organization dedicated to helping those in need rebuild their lives and reach their full potential. We employ 16,000 people across the country and help more than 2 million people in more than 400 communities in 44 states. Since 1896, our dedicated employees work hard each day to help America's most vulnerable groups, including at-risk youth, seniors, men and women returning from prison, veterans, homeless individuals, people with disabilities and those recovering from addictions. Our work touches the mind, body, heart - and ultimately the spirit – of those we serve.

A Brief History

Volunteers of America was founded in 1896 by social reformers Ballington and Maud Booth. They envisioned a movement dedicated to “reaching and uplifting” the American people. On behalf of the organization, the Booths pledged to “go where we are needed, and do whatever comes to hand.” The declaration has guided Volunteers of America's outreach efforts ever since. Now in our second century of our ministry of service, Volunteers of America is one of the nation's largest and most comprehensive human services organizations.

How did we get our name?

The name Volunteers of America was selected when the organization was founded more than 100 years ago. It signified that the organization was comprised of people voluntarily choosing to help others. In those days, a volunteer was anyone who was committed to a mission or cause. Our services are delivered through a partnership of professional staff, volunteers and other community supporters.
