Position Title: Director – Health & Safety

  

 

Reports To: VP, Environmental, Health & Safety

 

 

 

General Purpose

Facilitates the continuous improvement of health and safety performance for Client.  Directs and administers program oversight to Health & Safety programs, activities and issues across multiple Regions and functional specialties.  Assist VP of EH&S and operations leadership in development and implementation of safety culture and programs for the company.

 

Essential Functions

 

Function   

 

1.       Provides leadership and direction for program development and support as well as maintain regular and effective communications with site personnel regarding health and safety matters.

2.       Proactively manages Health and Safety in a manner that drives sustainable continuous improvement.

3.       Leads efforts to develop and implement policies, processes and procedures to ensure awareness and compliance with Health & Safety laws and regulations

4.       Responsible for identifying potential Health & Safety areas of concern which require priority attention to ensure compliance.

5.       Coordinates responses, reports, and negotiations with Federal, State, and local Health & Safety agencies.

6.       Directs the development of strategic and tactical approaches for dealing with Health & Safety issues and concerns. 

7.       Identifies, develop and implement policies, processes and procedures to ensure awareness and compliance with Process Safety Management regulations and best practices.

8.       Coordinate with operations leadership around key Health & Safety issues and programs. 

9.       Directs the development and implementation of training and awareness programs to ensure that Health & Safety obligations are understood and are addressed.

10.   Leads the organization to maintain advanced knowledge of developments in regulations and identifies implications on operations.

11.   Ensures compliance with Client’s administrative policies and procedures. 

12.   Provides leadership and direction to operations and Health & Safety staffs.

13.   Establishes appropriate objectives and functions for work group which support overall organization goals. 

14.   Communicates with all levels of management with respect to the Health and Safety strategy as well as to inform them of potential problems, changes in plans, and any important events.

15.   Effectively leads and motivates employees to perform to their highest potential by serving as a role model.  Encourages employees to be flexible, innovative, customer-oriented, willing to take reasonable risks and to show initiative. Recognizes and rewards effective and innovative performance.

Requirements

Job Qualifications/Minimum Requirements

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Extensive knowledge of Health & Safety laws/regulations and strategies for ensuring compliance with OSHA requirements including Process Safety Management (PSM) as well as specific state Health & Safety laws/regulations. Advanced mathematical, science and analytical abilities.  Strong organizational and communication skills (both written and verbal).

 

Demonstrated experience in H&S Strategy development and implementation.

Demonstrated written, presentational, influencing communication skills.

Experience as a ‘change agent’ that can work effectively at all levels of an organization.

 

Education or Formal Training  Minimum: Bachelor’s degree, OR an advanced degree in Health & Safety science, engineering or a related technical degree.  Incumbent will have taken various management training classes/seminars, i.e., Supervisor University, Ethics Training, etc.  Professional certifications are a plus.

 

 

Physical Requirements 

Incumbent must be able to move from location to location, hear and be heard, prepare written communications, present information to others, enter data into various programs, and be able to stoop and bend on a frequent basis.

 

Experience

Incumbent will have 15 years or more related Health & Safety experience in a professional capacity and no less than 5 years managerial experience.
