Job Description

Evaluate and provide comprehensive nursing care in a correctional setting while observing and maintaining the requirements of security.

 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

·        Initiate and maintain compliance with ACA, NCCHC, and GEO  policies for accreditation.

·        Devise nursing care plans on inmates.

·        Screens patients at sick call. Treats inmates with problems within professional capabilities and refers other medical problems to the appropriate physician.

·        Assist the physician with sick call and minor surgical procedures.

·        Ensure that physician’s orders are implemented. Uses problem oriented medical record system to chart using the S.O.A.P. Format.

·        Document all inmate contacts.

·        Maintain confidentiality of medical records.

·        Make rounds on observation patients, and records on progress notes. Evaluates symptoms, reactions, and progress of patients on periodic basis, charts and reports problems to supervisor.

·        Ensures that medications that are prescribed are administered as ordered using the formulary.

·        Apply knowledge of drugs and therapeutics in dispensing medication.

·        Maintain security while dispensing medications and be continually cognizant of the potential hazard of drug hoarding and trafficking among inmates. Maintain non-involvement in the security aspects of care.

·        Destroy and properly dispose of all needles/syringes.

·        Prepare regularly scheduled reports and special reports as necessary.

·        Participate in in-service education.

·        Perform other duties and responsibilities as designated.

·        Perform a variety of marginal duties not listed, to be determined, and assigned as needed.

 

 

 

 

 

Job Requirements

 • Graduate from a national league of nursing accredited school, and hold a current license to practice professional nursing, in the appropriate state(s). Maintain a current copy of license on file in the facility at all times.

 

•     Competence in performance of the following services: crisis intervention,  medical emergencies, physical assessment, medical nursing care, and psychiatric nursing care.

·        Drug Screen
