Description

GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES:  The psychiatrist must demonstrate knowledge of ethical guidelines and boundaries; the ability to appreciate diversity and the impact of cultural differences on client care; and the ability to provide services consistent with the cognitive, psychosocial, and physiological needs of clients.

 

REPORTS TO:  Director, Behavioral Health.

 

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  Requires sitting for long periods of time.  Occasional bending, stretching or lifting.  May require contact with individuals with communicable diseases.  Requires the ability to work under high stress conditions for long periods of time.  Ability to hear a normal range voice.  Ability to prepare written reports and use telephone equipment.

 

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:  Normal office environment.  Occasional exposure to communicable diseases and other conditions in a health center environment.  Occasional exposure to aggressive or violent clients.

 

DUTIES:

1.                  Interview, examine, and admit clients to the CHS Behavioral Health Department  
                     based on diagnostic criteria.

2.                  Examine, diagnose, and treat clients with mental illness and or substance abuse
                     disorders.

3.                  Prescribe appropriate psychotropic medication, evaluate client responses to
                     medications, and make adjustments accordingly.

4.                  Prescribe, conduct, and or administer group, individual and family psychotherapy
                     and other forms of specialized therapy when indicated.

5.                  Order and review laboratory tests.

6.                  Coordinate treatment with other Behavioral Health Clinicians when indicated.

7.                  Provides clinical expertise and consultation to other CHS providers.

8.                  Perform basic risk assessments.

9.                  Participate in treatment planning for at risk clients.

10.               Provide clinical supervision to Clinical Staff as needed.

11.               Contribute to the development and implementation of new ideas and methods.

12.               Complete comprehensive intake and psychosocial assessments.

13.               Assess clients’ progress to develop and modify treatment plan accordingly.

14.               Communicate with family members, and/or support persons to further the
                     effectiveness of treatment planning for the client, if desired by the client.

15.              Coordinate care with other providers, agencies and services.

16.              Maintain complete, up-to-date documents, and pertinent data within the client
                    medical record.

17.              Participate in on-going professional development and training and continues to
                   work toward certification or re-certification.

18.              Attend the professional staff meeting at CHS, and the Behavioral Health Staff 
                   meetings, individual supervision and clinical team meetings.

19.              Attend required meetings and participates in committees as requested including
                   external and community forums as assigned.

20.              Maintain patient confidentiality.

21.              Participate in community and/or agency wide events as assigned.

22.              Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Knowledge of professional medical practice and care to give and evaluate patient care.  Knowledge of organizational policies, regulations and procedures to administer patient care.  Knowledge of medical equipment and instruments to administer patient care.  Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment.  Skill in applying and modifying the principles, methods and techniques of medicine to provide on-going patient care.  Skill in taking medical history, maintaining records, writing reports, and responding to correspondence.  Skill in developing and maintaining department quality assurance.  Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, and the public.  Ability to maintain quality control standards.  Ability to react calmly an effectively in emergency situations.  Ability to interpret, adapt, and apply guidelines and procedures.  Ability to communicate clearly.

 

 

Education:

  1. Graduate of approved medical school.
  2. Board certified or Board eligible in appropriate specialty.
  3. Licensed to practice medicine in the State of Connecticut

 

Experience: 

1.   1-2 years clinical experience.
