Part Time LPN Evenings/Weekends
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Screens inmate requests for medical and dental care, providing examination and treatment of problems and referring to Jail physician or dentist as needed. Monitors medication distribution and refills. Administers and records vaccines, such as hepatitis B, and TB tests of Sheriff Department personnel and inmates as needed. Maintains and updates inmate medical records and workman's compensation records of Department personnel. Provides follow-up examinations for inmates treated for injuries or receiving medications, evaluates progress and determines need for additional actions. Assists Jail physician with medical care of inmates as requested. Periodically assists dentist, including removing extraction sutures and making referrals to oral surgeons as needed. Serves as liaison with medical professionals for Department personnel and inmates, making referrals and scheduling appointments as needed. Periodically monitors inmate's blood pressure and performs and forwards laboratory tests as ordered by physician, including urine and blood tests. Occasionally provides treatment for injuries, such as changing dressings or splints. Maintains log of medicines in stock, performing checks to discontinue outdated stock and ordering new supplies from pharmacy. Maintains inventory of needles, syringes, knife blades and other potentially harmful equipment, recording use of existing stock as required. Access and facilitate mental health referrals to appropriate facility or practitioner. Performs related duties as assigned.
Requirements
Graduation from state-accredited school of nursing with current registration as a License Practical Nurse. Thorough knowledge of and ability to make practical application of theories, principles and methods of the field of nursing. Working knowledge of jail operations and procedures. Ability to provide a wide range of medical care, including physical and mental health assessments, immunization injections, various laboratory tests and medication administration. Ability to follow universal health precautions at all times to prevent contamination of self and others. Ability to physically perform essential duties of position, including standing/walking for long periods, bending, stooping, reaching, handling objects and lifting/carrying objects weighing less than 25 pounds. Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, Jail detainees and personnel, other medical personnel and Indiana State Board of Health, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities and disabilities. Ability to maintain inmate medical records, and maintain confidentiality of Department records and information as required. Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions, and work alone and with others in a team environment with minimum supervision. Ability to occasionally work extended evening and/or weekend hours, serve on 24-hour call and respond swiftly, rationally and decisively in emergency situations.
