Position Summary
Under the direction of collaborating physician, provides advanced practice nursing care for patients within the Occupational Health setting. Also performs a wide variety of marketing, administrative, educational, clinical and supervisory duties within the Occupational Health Department  and serve as consultant/advisor to the nursing and administrative staff. Assume responsibility for personnel and patient care within the Occupational Health Department during their operational hours. Responsible for the treatment, follow up and monitoring of injured workers for client companies within the system. 

 

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

In accordance with protocols developed in collaboration with the supervising physician performs advanced physical and psychosocial assessments of patients and orders appropriate treatment, tests and prescribes medication.

Develops a holistic plan of care that meets physical, psychosocial, rehabilitative, discharge and chronic disease needs of both the patient and his/her family.

Evaluates learning needs of patient and family and provides age-specific and culturally appropriate education.

May also perform advanced skilled procedures as directed by physician.


Occupational Health Responsibilities

  1. Assess the health status of employees by obtaining health histories, perform physical examinations on employees, post injury examinations and establish treatment plans under the supervision of the Medical Director.
  2. Perform various specialized examinations (e.g., return-to-work examinations, disability, DOT physicals, drug testing, etc)
  3. Coordinate all activities pertaining to pre-placement examinations, working in cooperation with occupational health physician, nurse clinicians, applicable Personnel Department employees and client company personnel. Perform and monitor additional requested screenings (e.g., pulmonary function tests, urine drug screens and interpretation of results and appropriate follow up of abnormal findings).
  4. Assess and refer any employee health problems to applicable health care and related resources both within and outside the facility.
  5. Work in conjunction with Medical Director and/or designated physicians, responsible for developing, implementing and maintaining the Occupational Health Service and Industrial Accident Program including, but not limited to:
    1. Maintaining a current working knowledge of Joint Commission and OSHA standards and requirements;
    2. Establishing personal contacts with both contracted and non contracted area companies and industries to familiarize them with Occupational Health Services;
    3. Serving as a liaison and resource person between applicable area companies;
    4. Maintaining an accurate, professional and confidential medical record system;
    5. Consulting with area client companies in evaluating and recommending various preventive medical and educational programs pertinent to their employee needs; and
    6. Providing the follow-through to problems and inquiries of client area companies.
  6. Work in cooperation with the Infection Control Department regarding reporting, surveying, screening, and, as appropriate, implementing programs pertaining to prevention or spread of infectious disease. Carry out and coordinate a variety of health care prevention measures for hospital employees including screening programs, immunizations, skin tests, flu vaccinations, etc. in cooperation with Occupational Health Service physicians.
  7. Serve on various community and Business/Industrial Committees and Boards as they directly relate to position responsibilities.
  8. Compile, prepare and present monthly statistics and reports as needed within the areas of position responsibilities to Medical Director and the Regional Practice Administrator. Assist in budget preparation and monitoring for the Occupational Health Department as well as for the contracted companies, as requested. 
  9. Responsible for developing and revising policies related to Occupational Health and assessing department office flow for optimal efficiency.
  10. Attend meetings, discussions, conferences, seminars and workshops, both within and outside the OHS, as applicable to position responsibilities.
  11. Plan, conduct, and document regular meetings to discuss departmental issues. Assist staff to develop and meet professional goals and objectives.
  12. Responsible for developing, establishing and maintaining the best possible client relationships in marketing and servicing of the Occupational Health Services within the Clinton County area including: proposing, developing, and implementing marketing strategies for specific Occupational Health Service components. Represent the SPN Frankfort, in all outside activities pertaining to the Occupational Health Service.
  13. Work in close cooperation with a variety of internal facility departments, client companies and contracted health care vendors, (e.g., Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Social Services, Emergency Department, Radiology Imaging Services, etc.), to propose, develop, and implement specific Occupational Health Service activities pertinent to these individual departments and services.
  14. Protect the confidentiality of information within areas of position responsibilities by preventing unauthorized release, both verbally and/or in writing.
  15. Promote a continuous effort in quality improvement, enhancing the services provided to patients, their families, physicians and members of the OHS staff by demonstrating positive attitudes and positive actions through a display of courtesy, congeniality, cooperation, sensitivity and professionalism.
  16. Observe all health and safety requirements.
  17. Perform other similar and related duties as required or directed.

 

ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Direct and supervise assigned personnel and activities within the Occupational Health Department involving responsibility for employee performance evaluations, scheduling orientation and training. Make effective recommendations on assigned employee hiring, promotion, separation, transfer and other similar personnel actions. Organize nursing regimes with physicians and other health care disciplines within area of responsibility. Prepare assigned employee performance evaluations.  Resolve employee disciplinary problems within limits of own position responsibilities. 
  2. Recommend improvement of facilities and purchase of new equipment. Recommend changes in staffing based on knowledge of needs, resources and current trends. 
  3. Maintain knowledge of performance testing on all special equipment, evaluating condition and initiating prompt action for repairs. Recommend changes in policies, procedures and programs and submit to administration with adequate documentation to justify recommendations.

 

EDUCATIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Identify the learning needs of the staff in the areas of Occupational Health Service. 
  2. Propose, develop and implement educational presentations working in cooperation with the educational resources of the facility/community. 
  3. Participate in teaching health measures to patients and families in the Occupational Health Service.
  4. Participate in the orientation of newly assigned staff to policies and procedures and in their adjustment to new processes.
  5. Participate in providing clinical experience for nursing students in the areas of Occupational Health Services.
  6. Foster an environment within the Occupational Health Services for professional and personal development.
  7. Maintain current knowledge of trends and developments, new products and procedures.

 

 

 

 

 

Requirements

Education Required:         Master's of Science in Nursing from an accredited program.


Licensure/ Certification:
Current RN licensure. Nurse Practitioner Certification by ANA, BLSHealthcare Provider, ACLS preferred.  Duties require intensive knowledge of a highly specialized field and broad knowledge of major functions or activities. Evidence of continuing education is also required.

 

EXPERIENCE:

3-5 years of experience is preferred.

 

INDEPENDENT ACTION:

Functions independently within broad scope of departmental policies and practices; generally refers specific problems to Regional Practice Administrator or Medical Director only where clarification of departmental policies and procedures may be required.
 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

Duties include direct supervisory responsibility for personnel and activities of the Occupational Health Department, in collaboration with the Regional Practice Administrator. Provide functional or technical supervision of multiple personnel; which may include: contracted vendors implementing the Occupational Health Program, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Social Service, Laboratory, Radiology, Nursing, etc.
