JOB SUMMARY

 

Responsible for the administrative functions and clinical oversight of the Orthopedic Joint Replacement service line. Collaborates with the Medical Director and Nurse Manager to develop and accomplish program goals and achieve optimal patient care. Maintains awareness of legal, professional, institutional and fiscal responsibilities. Facilitates, coordinates, integrates and supports patient care. Functions as a clinical resource to the Nurse Manager and the unit. Operates within the scope of their practice as outlined by the Missouri State Board of Nursing.

 

         
JOB SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES


 
Patient Care Responsibilities

 
                  

  • Coordinates patient care in the Orthopedic Joint Replacement program. Supervises the flow of patients, evaluates care, and resolves problems related to the care process.


      
  • Facilitates patient scheduling throughout the acute care phase of orthopedic joint replacement. Implements processes that promote and maintain seamless care delivery.

      
  • Guides and assists in appropriate identification of the care needs of patients and their families. Ensures patient care goals, plans and protocols are developed for individual patients. Coordinates with physicians and staff to identify priorities among patient needs and problems, to plan for meeting these needs, and to solve related problems.


      
  • Ensures appropriate matching of caregiver skills with patient care needs.
      
  • Serves as a clinical resource to the staff in the care of joint replacement patients and other patients. Provides education to staff as requested.


      
  • Ensures implementation, continuity and good communication of physician orders.


      
  • Rounds on post-operative patients and documents in medical record accordingly. Assists in multi-disciplinary discharge rounds.

      
  • Performs follow-up assessments.
      
  • Establishes and maintains constructive professional relationships with physicians and other hospital personnel.

       
  • Monitors the use of specialized equipment and ensures smooth operation.
       
  • Maintains and utilizes knowledge of complex pathophysiological, psychological, sociocultural and spiritual variables which influences the patient's health status.

      
  • Provides direct patient care as needed.
  
Administrative Responsibilities

 
  

  • Promotes the joint replacement program to internal and external audiences. Maintains good public relations image with patients, family and the community and responds to special needs. Coordinates and teaches monthly joint replacement class for prospective patients.

     
  • Participates in short- and long-range planning for the joint replacement program. Assesses operational systems, activities, environment and resources. Participates in problem identification and resolution. Assists with expanding the program.
     
  • Develops policies and procedures for the joint replacement program. Assists the Nurse Manager with policies and procedures for the unit. Serves as a policy resource to staff.


     
  • Maintains knowledge of and compliance with regulations and guidelines, e.g., TJC, CMS, OSHA.  Assists staff and provides education as needed.


     
  • Improves outcomes by collaborating with Nurse Manager to develop and facilitate quality and safety activities for the unit.


     
  • During daily activities, assesses departmental processes for quality and safety issues.  Assesses potential or actual areas of risk.
     
               
  • Assists with quality and compliance activities such as Pyxis counts and reports, crash cart checks, documentation audits, etc.


              
  • Performs SCIP audits of all joint replacement patient medical records for compliance witcore measures.
             
  • Evaluates and documents the effectiveness of the patient care process using tools such as audits and peer reviews.

                  
  • Communicates unfavorable variances and trends to Nurse Manager in a timely fashion. Assists with corrective measures as requested.

                  
  • Develops and implements productivity standards for the joint replacement program. Assists with achieving productivity targets. Assures that resources are developed to meet goals.


                     
  • Helps to develop the annual budget for the joint replacement program and ensures that the program meets financial targets.


                     
  • Assists the Nurse Manager with successful achievement of budget and financial outcomes for the unit.
                   
Other

 

            
  • Attends departmental, divisional and educational meetings as scheduled.
               
  • Maintains clinical proficiency in subspecialty, providing direct care as needed.


                 
  • Maintains current knowledge of Orthopedic Joint Replacement program and future trends through journals and professional association contact.
                  
  • Performs other duties as assigned. 

         
Requirements
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

 

EDUCATION/TRAINING

 
                   

  • Bachelor Degree in Nursing
                     
                               

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE (with minimum requirements indicated as appropriate)

 
             

  • 2 years clinical experience in orthopedics.


                      
  • 2 years leadership experience preferred.

                      
  • Ability to work effectively in a highly visible position.


                     
  • Ability to present a positive public relations image and deal effectively with patients, families, physicians, staff and general public.


                    
  • Ability to maintain close continuous contact with multiple physicians.

                  
  • Ability to problem solve with follow-up on a daily basis.

                   
  • Detailed knowledge of current Orthopedic Joint Replacement patient care and techniques, as well as surgical procedures.


                   
  • Good management skills.
                 
  • Good working knowledge of hospital operations and interactions with other departments.

                    
  • Ability to maintain a positive self-image and service-oriented professional attitude at all times.

                   
  • Good communication and coordination skills.

                      
  • Effective time management skills. 


                               

CERTIFICATES AND/OR LICENSES

 


  • Current RN licensure in the State of Missouri

              
  • BCLS

              
  • Basic dysrhythmia
