This is a senior design engineering position for the design and development of electrical motors for a wide range of heavy, rugged-environment Defense and industrial applications.
Essential Functions
Planning/Organizing
- Leads the motor technology research, design development and supports manufacturing activities in AC induction motors, (in the range of 40 to 1500 hp). Designs and develops motors for a wide range of Defense and heavy industrial equipment applications. Develops product documentation and test procedures.
- Develops motor technology capability, performs electromagnetic analysis of motor design and power modules and inductors; evaluates and purchases motor design software, develops motor design standards and a motor manufacturing partnership. Develops structural and thermal analysis of motor designs.
- Interprets military and industrial specifications relevant to the motor product lines.
- Reviews RFQs to determine if legacy product will meet the specifications. If not, either modifies an existing model or designs and develops new. Meets with customers to understand their needs and resolves issues.
- Creates and edits engineering masters. Manages drafting of all required documentation for manufacturing and procurement. Supports shop floor activities by providing technical information and manufacturing sequences / procedures as required for manufacturing engineering and production.
- Evaluates ECRs and ECNs, making revisions to critical engineering database as required.
- Provides technical support to customers concerning new products and repairs.
- Works on special complex projects for design, modification, or implementation of controls and components.
· Works with the production and test personnel to ensure that all controls and components pass the required tests.
Customer/Vendor Work Relationships
· Customers: Provides support via phone, e-mail, and on-site visitation.
· Sales: Provides technical support, quotes, interpretation of customer documents, and performs contract reviews on assigned products
· Engineering: Interfaces with other Engineers and Designers/CAD Operators.
· Manufacturing: Interfaces with all departments including Winding, Machining, Assembly and Test Departments.
· Materials: Interfaces with Buyers and Planners – Technical assistance in vendor and product selections
Continuous Improvement/Productivity
· Represents the Engineering Department on Continuous Improvement Task Teams.
· Works on improving design standards and insuring that they are included in the latest projects.
Requirements
Education / Experience
BSME/MSME, BSEE/MSEE or higher engineering degrees, (PhD preferred), with over 10 years of electric motor Controls & Components experience.
- Must have large size motor design and development experience, preferably for DoD applications.
- Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills, with proficiency in MS Office suite of products.
- Ability to work well with people, both one-on-one and in a team-environment.
- Must combine professionalism and enthusiasm in approach to work and exhibit sense of urgency.
- Excellent time management skills; able to multi-task and respond to flexible workload requirements, sometimes with little advance notice.
- Solid technical engineering design understanding.
- Experience with magnetic simulation software like Ansys, Ansoft, Speed or Infolytica is desired
- Experience with SolidWorks, SolidWorks PDN and Visual ERP systems desired.
- Occasional travel (domestic and international) for customer or vendor visit will be required.
- US citizenship is required.
