RN - Registered Nurse - First Assistant - Operating Room - Relo

• Assists the Surgical Team members in providing intra-operative care to the perioperative patient by preparing and monitoring equipment, passing instruments, maintaining the sterile field, assisting with patient transfer/positioning and performing and variety of surgical skills and procedures. 

• Assumes role of liaison with the Surgeon and other Surgical team members. 

• Reviews schedule assignments for procedural needs. 

• Analyzes patient information and identifies patient problems for assigned patients.  Assists in the preparation of the operating room to receive the patient. 

• Confers with surgeon and collaborates with team members on implementation of the plan of care.  Evaluates each patient and his/her progress towards expected outcomes with updates to the plan of care accordingly. 

• Uses principles of aseptic technique to organize and maintain the sterile field.  Assembles and handles a variety of instrumentation and equipment identified for use by the surgical team e.g., electrocautery, power saws and drills, laser probes, endoscopy equipment, microscopes, cameras, stapling devices, etc. 

• Assists in the sizing and placement of implantables, e.g., prosthesis, grafts, heart valves, etc.  Handles and irrigates live tissues as directed by the surgeon.  Provides retraction support for optimal visibility.  Assists with wound closures. 

• Selects and applies dressings.  Maintains an awareness of environmental hazards and calls attention technique breaks for immediate correction. 

• Provides surgical team with written information regarding surgeon preferences for each surgical procedure.  Precepts and assists with orientation of new personnel and teaching students in health disciplines.   

• Takes call and rotates shifts according to the needs of the department.  Maintains proficiency in the 2nd scrub and RN circulating roles to provide support to the unit.  Assumes other responsibilities as assigned within the scope of professional nursing practice.

Possess a current Illinois license to practice professional nursing.  Possess manual dexterity, good body mechanics and the ability to anticipate the surgeon's needs during the operative procedure.  Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide age appropriate care to all patients/family served.  Possess effective communication human relation skills.  Is able to work under stress and accept constructive criticism.  Must pass Hospital administered First Assistant Competency Test.

Relocation may be available for out of state nurses.
