Safety Manager
Job Description:
The fundamental responsibility of the Safety Manager is to effectively support, administer and monitor the Company’s Safety Training Programs for Plant, Transportation and Office personnel. The Safety Manager will report directly to the Human Resources Director.
This job description is intended to summarize the overall level of responsibility of the job and is not an exhaustive list of all the duties performed.
Essential Functions of the Position:
- Verify attendance, hours worked, and driver’s transportation logs, and post information onto designated records.
- Ensure the “First Report of Injury" is filled out following an accident or injury as reported from a Company Employee.
- Establish a Company Safety Committee of both Department Managers and Plant Employees and Drivers to review safety concerns and make recommendations to management for potential additional safety efforts.
- Compile statistical reports, statements, and summaries related to Safety and Transportation and submit them to appropriate departments.
- Maintain employee confidence and protect Company operations by keeping information in compliance with Federal and State laws; keeping information accurate, updated, and confidential.
- Maintain employee/driver data and records for the site(s) as appropriate (personnel and medical files, training records etc.) and produce regular and ad-hoc reports for the site(s) as requested.
- Assists in the implementation of the most current and up-to-date Employee Safety manuals/training programs. Ensures all written policies remain updated as required by Federal and State laws.
- Keeps abreast of all Federal, State and Local employment laws and regulations, DOT compliance, and FMCSA. Assure Company adheres to these requirements.
- Maintains Employee’s/Driver’s DOT files. Ensures all Company Drivers successfully are entered into the DOT random drug and alcohol consortium. Properly follows DOT regulations in regards to hiring new Company Drivers.
- Ensure that all operators have the appropriate licenses, medical cards and any other certification required to operate a commercial vehicle in passenger service.
- Responsible for conducting behind-the wheel training (new hire, annual refresher, remedial and other refresher training) and evaluating drivers.
- Perform random Driver route audits. Effectively evaluate the performance of Company Drivers.
- Documents all training and determines when a driver has successfully met all requirements.
- Responsible for the recruitment and pre-employment requirements of new drivers in coordination with the Human Resources Director. Processes all new-hire paperwork to include scheduling physicals, drug screens, criminal record checks and MVR review.
- Administer the drug & alcohol program to include pre-employment screening, random testing, and testing for cause. Maintains an accurate testing log and testing results.
- Conducts accident and industrial injury investigation as required.
- Completes accident and/or injury reports when required.
- Conducts all post-accident retraining and documentation. Required action plan and follow-up to occur within 24 hours of reported incident or unfavorable Road Observation/Check Ride.
- Conduct Road Observations and Check Rides, ensuring that all drivers receive them per company policy. Records in the training file and a separate file for Road Observations and Check Rides.
- Leads in preparing and conducting the monthly safety meetings and accurately records all training.
- Maintains all DOT files, Random Drug testing, training records, accident files, etc. are in an “Inspection Ready" status at all times; ensures the confidentiality of all records.
- Ensure that all Drivers maintain the required safety equipment aboard their vehicles through training and random inspections.
- Serve as a professional role model for employee, trainers and drivers.
- Work closely with Company Transportation Manager(s) to make recommendations for hiring and terminations.
- Responsible for the required DOT truck inspections. Oversees and audits the Maintenance Shop’s vehicle organizational Preventative Maintenance Checks and driver MVR tickets.
- Ensure all OSHA model programs are updated; review OSHA requirements as they pertain to the Company.
- Facilitate the Forklift, Wheeloader and Bobcat ® training certification programs for the Company.
- Conduct monthly facility safety audits ensuring compliance with OSHA and EPA regulations and related corporate policies.
- Performs other duties as assigned from the Human Resources Director.
Requirements
Position Qualifications:
Experience in a leadership role within a Company’s Transportation or Safety Department is required.
Ideal candidate possesses the following:
- The Payroll and Human Resources Coordinator must posses the necessary skills and knowledge to work independently without much direction from the HR Director.
- Work requires professional written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
- Knowledge from working in a Union environment is preferred.
- Experience completing OSHA 300 forms.
- Prior experience working with Drivers and Manufacturing employees in multiple States is preferred, but not required.
- Knowledge and experience in Accident Investigation for Auto and Manufacturing injuries.
- Required expertise in the areas of defensive driving, service area familiarization, loading, unloading, proper load securement, proper manifest documentation, use of on-board equipment, hearing conservation, required PPE, accident and emergency procedures, dispatch and radio communications, and passenger sensitivity.
- Ability to participate in and facilitate group meetings. Ability to train other organization employees on Safety related issues.
- Must be a National Safety Council Defensive Driving Instructor or have an equivalent training and certification (Ex: TSI Certification).
- Experience first-hand within a Transportation and/or Safety department/organization required.
- Ability to handle multiple priorities and solve inquiries and issues expeditiously and efficiently.
- Must be willing and able to attend at least 90% of the Company’s monthly safety meetings which may occur prior to 7AM periodically.
- Bilingual in the Spanish language is preferred.

Position Requirements:
Candidates must possess at least five years experience in a Transportation and/or Manufacturing Safety position. Prior experience managing others is strongly preferred.
Candidate must have strong knowledge of DOT Regulations.
High School diploma required.
Some travel may be required as needed, not to exceed 15% of the time.
Ability to interface with people at all levels within the organization.
Salary: $40,000-$50,000/annual, salary-exempt.
