Company Overview

When World War II was coming to a close, our grandfather, Walter E. Smithe, Sr., could see a big demand coming – a demand for the furniture and appliances it would take to create the welcoming homes that returning veterans dreamed of. With a partner he began by selling furniture and appliances on Chicago’s Belmont Avenue.

In the 60 years since that first store, more family members have joined the business, including our great uncle Charles and then our father, Walter E. Smithe, Jr. In the late 70s we made the move away from appliances to concentrate on custom furniture. In fact, it was Dad who pioneered the concept of custom upholstery in Chicago.

Today we are the custom furniture specialists of Chicago. And, because everything is handmade one-at-a-time, every piece comes with a written, lifetime warranty. That’s probably one of the reasons we keep customers for generations, too. We take building their dreams very seriously – ever since our grandfather’s first vision of the business.

But we have another secret to our success. Our designers. Customers tell us they’re the best in the business. We give them a portfolio of the best furniture and accessory lines. We also make sure they work in beautiful showrooms. There are in 13 locations convenient to just about everyone in the Chicago area and Northwest Indiana. But Smithe designers also make house calls at no additional fee. Seems as though we all share Walter Sr.’s vision.

So when we say it’s a family business, it really is more than three generations and the three of us.
