A Route Sales Representative (RSR) has direct and daily interaction with retail customers such as store managers, receiving clerks and other employees. A major key to success in this position is the development of strong relationships integral to increasing sales and solving problems. RSR’s are responsible for first-line communication and problem solving with IBC’s retail customers.
RSRs are assigned to a route with established accounts. They are responsible for increasing sales on those accounts by adding additional displays and shelf space, and developing strong customer rapport. A typical day starts between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m., depending on the location and the route assigned. New RSR’s may work longer days while they learn the processes (12 – 14 hours per day). More experienced RSR’s typically work 9-11-hour days. This position enjoys variety in daily schedules, but demands attention to detail to meet the changing needs in the marketplace.
An average route consists of approximately 20 stops per day, which require multiple times in and out of the route truck. The stop schedule may vary each day. RSR’s are expected to make deliveries even in bad weather conditions. Although route trucks are not air conditioned, they do feature small foot heaters for the colder months. Requires ability to drive standard/manual shift (most trucks do not offer automatic transmissions). Class E license is most common requirement however, some routes may require a Class B.
RSRs need to develop a strong understanding of all IBC products, as well as an awareness of the competition’s products and how they impact store shelf space, etc. They also need to develop a keen understanding of product codes and ordering process in order to reduce the amount of merchandise that goes unsold before it reaches its code (stale) date. Proficient RSRs quickly develop good techniques in product handling, which helps avoid damaging baked product, which can be fragile.
RSRs are provided New Employee Orientation and On-the-Job Training. On-the-Job training provides new employees with 4 weeks training with an experienced RSR. During this time you will have an opportunity to observe the job and begin to perform various functions with direct supervision. The trainer and the manager will determine when a new employee is ready to be assigned to manage their own route independently.
