Position Summary:
 
The Sales and Use Tax Manager will take ownership of and responsibility for all company matters related to sales and use taxes.
 
 
Key Duties & Responsibilities:
  •  Take ownership of and responsibility for all company matters related to sales and use taxes.
  • Manage third party vendor to ensure that all sales and use tax returns are filed timely and accurately and that all required payments are made.
  • Prepare/review sales and use tax account reconciliations, adjusting journal entries, and fixed asset tax accruals.
  • Manage all aspects of the Company's sales and use tax controversies with the goal of achieving the most favorable outcomes possible.
  • Coordinate audit data collection, prepare written IDR responses, directly interface and negotiate with government auditors, and coordinate the use of outside legal advisors.
  • Perform research of various sales and use tax issues, as needed.
  • Analyze pending and enacted sales and use tax legislation to determine its impact on the business.
  • Review taxability of items and tax rates in POS system and coordinate system updates for rate changes, law changes, and new taxing jurisdictions.
  • Perform reverse audits to uncover refunds and tax savings opportunities and to ensure a high level of compliance with applicable sales and use tax laws and regulations.
  • Provide advice to operating units on sales and use tax matters and pending transactions, as needed.
  • Perform special projects and analyses, as needed.

 

Qualifications
Education, Qualifications & Working Conditions
 
  • 7 years of sales and use tax experience, preferably in a multi-unit retail environment, and experience with large, multi-state corporations through work in industry or in a professional services firm.
  • Recent hands-on experience in sales and use tax controversies is required, either as a taxpayer advocate or as a state auditor.
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or other business-related field.  An advanced degree or CPA certification is preferred but not required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, an ability to persuade and affect outcomes while maintaining good working relationships, and an ability to explain complex tax concepts in a clear and concise manner.
  • Strong project management skills.
  • Strong computer skills, including a command of Microsoft Excel.
  • Ability to perform well under pressure and adhere to strict deadlines.
  • Desire and ability to operate with limited supervision while also contributing as a member of a team when needed.
  • Proficiency in web based tax research (CCH & RIA).
  • Working knowledge of Lawson and Hyperion systems preferred.
