Job Description

The primary accountability for this role is to ensure underwriting integrity and data quality for all in force business and leading the insurance underwriting teams to achieve operational excellence that support our Enterprise Strategy.  This includes all underwriting and underwriting support functions for all lines of business and territories. These efforts are coordinated with other Product and Services departments  (i.e. Product Development, State Operations, Systems Support and Business Process Management) and Enterprise functions (Sales and Market Management, Finance, IT, Claims and Legal) to achieve overarching strategies, goals and initiatives.

 

This position will lead an underwriting team of 4 managers and 100+ Underwriters. 

 

Daily responsibilities for this role include the following:

 

Underwriting integrity of our insurance book of business. Policy data steward. Monitor day to day productivity and throughput for underwriting operations. Ensure service level agreements are met throughout the Enterprise. Staff development planning, training and employee engagement. Executive status reports for projects, initiatives and operational performance (verbal and written). Establish collaborative working relationships with partners across Enterprise, Partner Clubs and vendors. Leadership and/or sponsorship of operational effectiveness initiatives such as straight-through-processing, back office simplification, consolidated rules engine and real-time policy issuance. Modeling, budgeting and forecasting for expenses and staffing.

This role can be based in the Las Vegas, NV or Oklahoma City, OK.  Significant travel between the other underwriting locations and AAA headquarters is required: Las Vegas, NV; Richmond, CA; Colorado Springs, CO; Oklahoma City, OK; and Walnut Creek, CA. Member advocate during all strategic and operational planning and day to day decision making.

Responsibilities: Responsible for strategic and operational initiatives, as well as direct day to day operations, by coordinating and managing the responsibilities and resource allocations of the functional areas within the group: in-footprint underwriting, out of footprint underwriting and book conversions/special projects. 

This position provides recommendations for risk eligibility, selection, and application of the rate plan for all areas.  Additionally, the Underwriting Executive is responsible for all eligibility exception processes.  Responds to complex inquiries from Sales, IT, DOI, and insureds regarding individual risk selection decisions.

This executive will lead the development of our geographic underwriting center strategy.  Additionally, the position will participate in the strategic prioritization process for projects and system enhancements and fixes.

Accountable for the development, training and engagement of more than 100 insurance professionals.

Key performance measures for this position include:  employee engagement score, customer/client satisfaction surveys, expense variance, PIF/FTE ratio, straight-through-processing ratio, quality assurance standards, production standards new, renewal and endorsement underwriting performance, and regulatory compliance. 

 
Job Requirements

Skills/Experience required for consideration: 10 years of insurance management experience. Expert knowledge of property and casualty insurance underwriting principals. Experience with portfolio underwriting practices. Operations Management. Organized 5+ years experience working with executives at a strategic level. 5+ years creating and managing a group budget including ROI analysis. Comprehensive understanding of Portfolio underwriting. BS/BA Business Administration or related field preferred. Proven leader connecting the dots between business strategies and tactical operational procedures and goals. Planning, project management and problem solving skills needed to successfully manage projects of broad scope and ability to manage cross-functional teams. Strong decision maker with a bias towards action Mathematical skills needed to assess contract proposals, determine profitability of guidelines, track department expenditures, and approve the submitted annual budget.
