The Senior Manufacturing Engineer leads the development of processes and equipment to reduce the cost of saleable product while maintaining or improving product quality and ensures manufacturing can produce quality products utilizing economical and reliable processes. This position makes improvements via material changes, equipment improvements, product flow evaluations or engineering tools such as statistical process control and design of experiments. The Senior Manufacturing Engineer will provide hands-on support and lead all aspects of the design development of product packaging to ensure product integrity and appeal under varying shipping and display conditions. Specific responsibilities will include:
1. Develops project timelines, coordinates intra- and inter-department activities to accomplish schedule and understands budget and contains costs.
2. Documents, plans, execution and analysis engineering studies and activities. Provides summary report of internal technology transfer and future reference and review and sign-off on documentation relative to product assignments.
3. Develops PMI practices, specifications, and procedures that ensure product quality and realize design intent. Enforces documentation and change order control and utilizes statistical methods for data analysis.
5. Supports manufacturing in the development of packaging by working with outside vendors as necessary to obtain packaging designs and tooling; works with product engineers, customers, packaging suppliers and shippers to design all types of packaging containers; provides cost and consequences information regarding material and processes of packaging design and advise Product Engineers of preferred methods.
6. Analyzes processes and procedures for potential safety and clean room issues and develops safety procedures, documents, and training as needed.
7. Directs activities for outsourcing or multi-sourcing components to improve production costs. Performs process validation in conjunction with Quality Engineering; specifies, installs and troubleshoots major process equipment.
8. Proactively identifies processing bottlenecks and identifies activities to ensure compliance with approved production plans. Implements measures to ensure smooth product flow and efficient utilization of space.
Technical & Behavioral Requirements:
1. Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering is required, Industrial or Packaging Technology backgrounds, preferred.
2. A minimum of five (5) years experience in a manufacturing environment, preferably in the medical device industry with at least three (3) years of packaging experience included.
3. Thorough knowledge and skill related to packaging materials and processes, e.g., PETG Trays, Tyvek, Chevron pouches, Sterilization, shipping and shelf life testing, heat sealers, tray sealers).
4. Basic knowledge and skill in using Statistical Process Control and knowledge and skill in utilizing blueprints.
5. May be required to support manufacturing operations during off-hours, as required.
