The Director of Technical Services, while reporting to the Sr. Director IT Infrastructure & Architecture, will manage the company's IT infrastructure and services essential to running all critical business applications that help operate Dollar General's business.  This role will involve aligning resources to support current business needs, future strategies and anticipated business growth.  The Director of Technical Services has overall responsibility for systems administration, database administration, desktop and server technology, IT Help Desk and PC support in the Store Support Center and Distribution Centers.
 
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Support systems development and key business users to ensure that the required infrastructure is in place for new software driven by key company initiatives:   
    • Ensure that databases are sized properly and provides appropriate systems administration and configuration to support those key initiatives. 
    • Ensure that appropriate systems backup and recovery strategies are in place.
    • Ensure that new systems are set up in accordance with current legal, SOX, PCI and company operating policies.
  • Manage employees by developing, communicating, maintaining and enforcing IT policies, process and standards regarding Dollar General's implementation and use of information technology. 
  • Negotiate infrastructure purchases based on functionality, price and applicability to business requirements. 
  • Assist other areas of IT to ensure capacity and appropriateness of technical services. 
  • Oversee management of expense and capital budget spending for activities within approved plans. 
 


Job Requirements

  • Thorough understanding of concepts behind systems/database administration, high availability, application development, desktop technologies, email needs, backup and recovery technologies, enterprise technologies, service delivery, and the supporting technologies and processes.
  • Able to delegate and follow-up; able to keep track of multiple technical topics at once.
  • Team player with a high level of ownership and urgency.
  • Ability to effectively communicate technical ideas both verbally and in writing.
  • Able to stay current with technology; assessing, adopting, adapting where significant benefits are possible.
  • Excellent project management and problem solving skills.
Work Experience and/or Education
  • Bachelor's degree in the field of Computer Science or related field; Master's degree a plus.
  • 5 to 7 years of increasing management experience in a 24x7 infrastructure management.
  • Technical background with infrastructure items such as database administration, systems administration, or enterprise storage management.
  • Project management experience preferred.
  • Previous work managing technical staff, budgets, vendors, support contracts, and third party services.
