The Infection Preventionist applies knowledge and skills, professionally in daily performance of Infection Control activities. These responsibilities include (but are not limited to) surveillance, analysis, reporting, and recording activities as well as setting standards and evaluating compliance for practices that are associated with the prevention and control of health care associated infections. The program coordinator complies with the mandates of required accrediting and regulatory agencies and communicates pertinent information to the members of senior management and medical staff.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
1. Working knowledge and ability to demonstrate a comprehension of medical and nursing education and patient care management, microbiology, pathology, immunology, and medical statistics or biostatistics.
2. Possess a working knowledge and have experience in the practice of epidemiological principles and infectious disease as they relate to infection control.
3. Have a knowledge of sterilization, sanitation, and disinfection practices.
4. Knowledge of pertinent regulatory, accrediting, and advisory body requirements including, but not limited to, state and county regulations, Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations regulations, and recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
5. Ability to interact effectively with all levels of health care personnel in this and other health care facilities; public health services at the local, state, and national levels; and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
6. Must be able to take a leadership role in implementation of strategies designed for cost-effective prevention of transmissible diseases.
7. Have effective written and verbal communication skills, including knowledge of adult education principles as they relate to educating and responding to hospital and external agency personnel.
8. Must be computer literate, with a working knowledge of a word processing and an epidemiology software system. This includes knowledge of and ability to use online services for research.
9. Must be experienced in networking through the use of listservs, email, and professional organizations.
10. Must demonstrate a basic understanding of performance improvement monitoring and development of performance improvement indicators.
