Requirements • Reports to Nurse Director.

• A Registered Nurse who, after additional education and/or training, is specialized in perioperative and perianesthesia nursing practice. Provides direct nursing care for pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients. Monitors, records and communicates patient condition as appropriate. Instructs and educates patients and families.

• Provides professional nursing care to patients undergoing surgery in accordance with established policies and procedures. Works directly with physicians and anesthesia providers in planning and implementing quality patient care.

• Prepares and maintains recovery room for all surgical procedures. Establishes and utilizes a checklist to monitor operations, oxygen/medical gases, and equipment for conformity to surgery center standards to ensure safety of the patient as well as personnel.

• Utilizes critical thinking and keen nursing assessment skills. Responds to surgical emergencies such as cardiac, pulmonary, respiratory failure, and/or hemorrhage. Proficient in BLS, ACLS, and PALS (or willing to obtain ACLS and PALS certifications within six months of hire).

• Responsible for pre-operative and post-operative nursing care including: proper
verification of patient, surgical site and surgery; history and physical completion;
informed consent verification; adherence to admission/discharge criteria; and
timely notification of physician and/or anesthesia of patient changes/concerns, etc.

• Monitors patients and if necessary has the authority to cancel cases as deemed
necessary for various acceptable reasons, including surgeon incapacitation.

• Using the five patient’s rights, administers prescribed medications with applied knowledge of pre-operative and post-operative medications and possible adverse reactions and therapy. Assists the anesthesia provider with medication inventory, logging and disposal.

• Provides respiratory and ventilator management and monitoring for patients. Applies dressings, monitors vital signs, and provides support and assistance to patients and/or surgical staff as required.

• Provides assistance and expertise in the daily operations of the center. Responsible for assisting with committees, such as quality improvement, infection control, and incident reporting activities. Promptly notifies supervisor of any staff/patient problems or concerns, incidents, and/or any other issues that may occur at the center.

• Works both autonomously and collaboratively with others. Communicates with clinical, clerical, billing, providers, patients and families to ensure continuity of care.

• Maintains strictest confidentiality; adheres to all HIPAA guidelines/regulations.
At all times, displays professional demeanor and image to include wearing professional scrubs along with appropriate nametag.

• Performs all duties in manner that promotes team concept and reflects Emerald Surgical Center mission and philosophy.

• Performs additional functions incidental to surgery center activities. The job duties listed above are representative and characteristic of the duties required and the level of the work performed in the job title.

• Maintenance of current Idaho nursing license.
