- Works with our internal partners to maintain an ongoing assessment of the current monitoring environment in order to identify gaps in coverage and capability; based on findings, participate in enhancements development and assist with efforts in distribution in order to provide a more effective monitoring environment.
- Works closely with Systems Administration and other third level administrative groups in order to verify and certify the functionality of monitoring tools on applicable platforms.
- Works with customers of the monitoring environment (e.g., Enterprise Support) to build strong relationships and ensure that their familiarity with the monitoring tools is maintained. Promote the monitoring philosophy as required, providing guidance to end users of the service in terms of how they can be more proactive in avoiding potential issues which could degrade service.
- Assumes a lead role in project meetings as required in order to represent the best interests and philosophy of the monitoring engineering team for the purpose of promoting the use of monitoring tools in our IT infrastructure.
- Represents the team in all facets of ITIL as it pertains to monitoring; this includes interacting with Change Management in order to facilitate new capability deployment, as well as working with Configuration Management to ensure the accuracy and integrity of the CMDB.
- Maintains the monitoring environment, troubleshooting issues as they arise and working with vendor support if required in order to ensure optimum availability of the monitoring environment to its end users and partners. Provides after hours technical support to the monitoring environment as warranted to assure maximum network uptime.
- Plans and performs maintenance of the monitoring environment during approved downtime periods as well as apply all authorized software upgrades and patches as required, in order to conform to standards set forth by the vendor and our end users/customers.
- Creates and/or maintains documentation as it relates to the system level operation of the monitoring environment and the design of each monitoring application and service (including policy specifications) in order to provide a knowledge base that peers and service partners can benefit from.
- Provides guidance and assistance to junior level employee within the group as warranted.
- Bachelor's degree in computer science/MIS and a minimum of eight years experience in an enterprise network or server support environment is required. The equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
- Knowledge of the HP OpenView suite of products (including Network Node Manager) and NetIQ AppManager suite experience is required.
- Ability to perform automation tasks and build custom monitors to meet ad-hoc needs via agents and/or scripting required.
- Strong knowledge of UNIX and Windows operating systems.
- UNIX shell scripting skills required; Perl scripting experience preferred, but not required.
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, written and oral communication skills.
