Physical Therapist:  Tests each patient and design individual programs of treatment. May use massage to improve muscle condition; apply ice to reduce swelling or heat to relieve pain; and utilize therapeutic equipment, such as whirlpool baths, ultrasonic machines, and ultraviolet and infrared lamps. Explains procedures and treatments to patient to gain cooperation, understanding and allay apprehension. Teaches patients how to do exercises with such equipment as pulleys and weights, stationary bicycles, and parallel bars. Teaches patients and their families how to use and care for wheelchairs, braces, canes and crutches, and artificial limbs.

Occupational Therapist: Helps patients of all ages who have limited abilities establish, develop and/or maintain the ability to complete daily functions and tasks. Through regular therapy sessions, occupational therapists work one-on-one with patients, focusing on their individual needs to help them achieve improved quality of life and a sense of independence. Explains procedures and treatments to patient to gain cooperation, understanding and allay apprehension. Concentrates on ameliorating the physical, mental, social and emotional sources of patients’ disabilities.
