Description The Senior Network Administrator reports to the Assistant Director of Systems and Networking Services.  
 

System Administration

Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Systems and Network Services and the Director of ISS, the Systems Administrator performs a variety of complex professional duties in providing information systems and technology support for the achievement of ISS and University mission and objectives:

·   administers, maintains operating stability/efficiency and ensures the security of the Washburn University data network; 

·   recommends, deploys and configures new hardware and software;

·   provides internal ISS staff training and support as necessary;

·   designs/configures network systems and support servers to fit Washburn's needs.

 

Installs, configures, administers, and establishes system security of a campus network environment which includes primarily Cisco hardware and adheres to strong (industry standard) systems administration techniques and procedures to provide a reliable and secure technology infrastructure.

 

Documentation

Creates and maintains documentation on all hardware, systems, and software as directed.  Maintains project work logs, communicates major changes in email, completes weekly work summaries to ensure timely and effective sharing of documentation with other SysNet system and network administrators.

 

Maintenance and Monitoring

 Monitors and analyzes day-to-day operating environment of the campus network and internet connections using sound judgment to make decisions regarding system maintenance, service outages, and notification of problems or changes to provide optimal computing experience for students and employees.  Serves as lead administrator or backup on various servers and services as assigned.

 

Research and Training

Reviews professional and vendor literature and attends classes, seminars and/or conferences as approved or directed by the immediate supervisor to enhance knowledge of trends and developments related to administration areas.  Recommends updates, improvements or installation of new or improved systems and services to senior ISS staff to assist in maintaining a computer system that serves the needs of the University adequately and efficiently.

 

General

Participates in 24x7 on-call rotation and performs other duties as assigned to ensure the continued operation of the WU computer system.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:  Bachelor's degree.  4 years’ immediately prior experience in LAN network administration including management of Cisco switches and routers.  Experience with Cisco PIX and/or ASA firewalls.  Experience in configuring TCP/IP routing.  Demonstrated ability to work well as part of a diverse technical team. Current CCNA certification or ability to attain CCNA certification within 6 months of hire.  Ability to move, maneuver and raise/lower equipment weighing as much as 50 pounds to waist height and for 20 feet.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:  CCNP, CWNA, and/or MCP certifications.  Experience with VLANs, DHCP, DNS, VPNs, WANs and/or routing.
