OPPORTUNITY
We have a very exciting, rewarding and visible finance leadership opportunity supporting our operations in the state of Maryland. You will report directly to our regional senior business director supporting all aspects of the general accounting functions for our Human Services business entities within the state. This is very much like a Corporate Controller position and a great stepping-stone if you aspire to achieve that level of responsibility. Key objectives within your first year will include (but not limited to):
- Learning and understanding the inner workings of (3) business entities we oversee in MD:
o Local School for Children with Behavioral Challenges
o Children’s Foster Care Services
o Group Home Services for Children and Adults
- Taking over budgeting system responsibilities (Hyperion)
o Internal and external budgeting and forecasting
o Contract management
o And more…
- Monthly reporting and financial partner to the MD State Director
o Analysis, reporting of monthly “key indicators"
o Recommending and articulating action for improvement opportunities
- Managing relationship with external auditors
POSITION OVERVIEW
This is a very visible and critical role based in Maryland supporting an operation of close to 500 employees. You will oversee about 10 people total including 2 general ledger supervisors as direct reports. We really need a strong, dynamic leader with great team building and people skills. You will report to the Regional Senior Business Director who will certainly expect great things but offers a very supportive management style and will set clear expectations. The primary role of what we call our - State Accounting Manager is to provide overall supervision, accountability, and effective completion of duties and responsibilities of the general accounting, payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable and financial reporting functions within a state’s business operations.
Some General Responsibilities:
- Establish accounting controls and procedures for the protection of company assets, including timely/accurate monthly balance sheet account reconciliations.
- Analyze, interpret and communicate financial trends requiring senior management’s attention.
- Oversee the preparation of internal and external financial reports, and the year-end audit schedule package, including cost reports required by regulatory agencies.
- Review and monitor all accounts receivable/payable and payroll activities. Maintain appropriate controls to ensure integrity and accuracy of information.
- Oversee the monthly accounting closing cycle. Generate and/or oversee the distribution of all monthly-required financial reports to operations and other functional areas.
- Assign and audit the work of the accounting department.
- Assist in the preparation of annual operating and capital budgets and monthly operating reforecast for all services within the state.
- Assist in developing short and long-term plans that are consistent with MENTOR’s financial objectives, strategic initiatives and values.
- Ensure adherence to all corporate philosophies, policies, procedures and values.
- Maintain relationships with payer agencies throughout assigned region to facilitate timely billing and collections.
- Analyze both new and existing business and provide management with recommendations for growth and improvement.
- Work with operations managers to improve their understanding of financial aspects of the business.
- Assist with recurring or special projects such as Sarbanes Oxley and system upgrades.
- Ensures Sarbanes Oxley compliance with all assigned areas and other audit requirements.
Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field or commensurate experience
- CPA or MBA is desirable but not required
- 7-10 years experience in accounting and financial management overall preferred
- Five or more years in an Accounting Manager or Controller role including general accounting, accounts receivable, accounts payable, etc.
- Experience with Hyperion and Oracle is certainly ideal but we would consider other top tier systems experience such as PeopleSoft
- The budgeting system expertise must be heavy on the budgeting module, only reporting won’t help you succeed.
- Exception power-user MS Excel skills are absolutely required to be successful in this role.
- Experience in any or all Health and Human Services agencies is highly desired: DDA, DHR, DJS, MSDE
- We also desire experience with funding regulatory and contractual funding agencies
- From a people management and team building perspective you really must have a great track record to convey to us.
- Any auditing experience is a big plus as well.
