Description

The Pharmacy Technician performs a variety of technical duties related to the procurement, receipt, preparation, returns/disposal, storage, distribution and accountability of all medical infusion supplies and pharmaceuticals including commercial, controlled-substance, chemotherapy, anti-neoplastics and investigational agents.  Demonstrates proficiency in IV preparation, chemotherapy, auditing and using Pyxis equipment and reporting mechanisms.

Requirements

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Reconstitutes IV medications and prepares sterile preparations (admixtures, minibags, syringes, irrigations and fluids) according to guidelines and aseptic technique. Utilizes established guidelines to determine the correct diluent and diluent volume to reconstitute sterile powders and to identify agent requiring special admixing precautions.
  • Performs calculations necessary to determine the amount of reconstituted drug needed to prepare admixture doses, as well as to calculate additive volumes for large volume admixture preparation.
  • Accurately prepares IV products in an efficient manner.
  • Receives and stocks pharmaceuticals in Pyxis and in other specified storage area.  Also receives and stocks related infusion supplies, maintaining proper and accurate receipt for all supplies and pharmaceuticals per policy and law.
  • Completes monthly inventories, current pricing reports and other projects relating to pharmaceutical and supply cost.
  • Implements Pyxis units and audits/manages inventory count at all sites including setting and updating appropriate PAR levels.
  • Performs clerical functions related to daily pharmaceutical activities.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

  • Associates Degree or Diploma Program/Certification from an accredited pharmacy technician training program.  Prefer National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board accreditation.
  • At least 2 years of pharmacy experience with background in preparations of IV admixtures and chemotherapeutic agents.
  • Prefer experience with inventory control, purchasing, contracts, automated dispensing equipment and dispensing software.
  • Prefer retail pharmacy experience.
