Description
Direct Support Professional
Spectrum Community Services of Indiana LLC, provides residential services to individuals with disabilities throughout Indiana. We are currently seeking compassionate, understanding Direct Support Professionals to join our team in Northwest Indiana.
Direct Support Professionals are responsible for assisting with the daily needs of individuals with developmental disabilities such as mental retardation, Autism, cerebral palsy, and Down Syndrome. Activities of daily living include hygiene (i.e., showering, bathing, toileting, grooming), meal preparation or assistance, attending medical appointments and following through with recommendations, medication administration, and participating in recreational activities in the home and community.
Often times, our clients also have mental health issues (i.e., depression, bi-polar), medical needs (i.e., constipation, dietary needs, seizures), physical limitations (i.e., paralyzed, poor fine or gross motor control, unsteady gait), and intense behavioral needs.
Direct Support Professionals must complete an extensive 2 week training. Our paid training includes behavior management techniques, medical training as specified by the client’s needs, Medcore training, First Aid, CPR, and Handle with Care (a specified technique for using physical restraints to safely manage intense behaviors). Employees must display competence in all areas before working with any clients.

Requirements
Direct Support Professionals must be able to physically, mentally, and emotionally display the ability to safely care for the clients they work with. They may be required to lift or assist in transferring clients with physical limitations. Direct Support Professionals must remain awake at all times, including midnight shifts, and may work shifts in excess of 8 consecutive hours. Direct Support Professionals are responsible for using their own vehicles to transport clients on a daily basis.
A Direct Support Professional working with individuals shall meet the following requirements:
(1) Be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
(2) Demonstrate the ability to communicate adequately in order to:
(A) complete required forms and reports of visits; and
(B) follow oral or written instructions.
(3) Demonstrate the ability to provide services according to the individual’s Individual Service Plan (ISP).
(4) Demonstrate the willingness to accept supervision.
(5) Demonstrate an interest in and empathy for individuals.
The Direct Support Professional position also requires a high school diploma/GED, demonstrated skill and/or potential in working with individuals with disabilities, and a driver’s license valid in Indiana with an acceptable driving record. Passing a drug screen is required as a condition of employment.
