The Director of Pharmacy is responsible for: (1) the procurement, distribution, and control of all pharmaceuticals used within the facility; (2) the evaluation and dissemination of comprehensive information about drugs and their use to the institution's staff and patients; and (3) the monitoring, evaluation, and assurance of the quality of drug use. These functions are carried out in cooperation with other institutional departments and programs.
Also requires attention to detail and concentration. Good analytical skills are a must. Ability to manage a large number of tasks simultaneously and to anticipate future needs. Must have a good ability to communicate with a wide variety of professionals and non-professionals.
Duties and Responsibilities Requirements:
1. Responsible for setting the short- and long-range goals of the Pharmacy Department on trends in health care and institutional pharmacy practice and the specific needs of the institution.
2. Responsible for improving the health of patients of all ages by supervising care provided: (a) from all patient care locations; (b) while on multi-disciplinary patient care rounds; (c) through direct patient contact; and (d) to patients for whom a pharmacist consultation is requested, (d) patient chart review.
3. Assures that work schedules, procedures, and assignments use pharmacy personnel and resources in the most efficient manner possible.
4. Ensures that all pharmacy personnel posses the education and training needed for their responsibilities and that competence of all staff is maintained through relevant continuing education programs.
5. Establishes and maintains procedures for the orientation and evaluation of personnel based on predetermined objectives.
6. Prepares periodic reports to the institution's administration containing qualitative and quantitative information on the pharmacy's activities.
7. Directs an ongoing, systematic program for assuring the quality of pharmaceutical services. This program is integrated with the hospital's quality improvement activities.
8. Ensures compliance with relevant standards and guidelines of the American Society of Health System Pharmacists and the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Organizations.
9. Supervises and monitors the work of pharmacists and technical support personnel.
