Position Summary 
Pharmacy Technician assists the pharmacist in preparation of medications for distribution to long term care facilities based on the physician orders and prescriptions.  Accomplish this by following departmental policies and procedures within the scope of long term care pharmacy standards. 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Develops a current knowledge of Long Term Care (LTC) pharmacy policies & procedures & supports them.

  • Assists the pharmacist(s) on duty as their primary responsibility; performing these duties as the number one priority.

  • Fills daily drug orders accurately and efficiently in a timely manner, under the supervision of a pharmacist.

  • Reorders out of stock or low inventory items by writing them down on the “want book:  If trained, assist in ordering drugs from wholesaler via telxon, etc., as needed.

  • Assists in processing returned drugs and recycle/dispose per procedure.

  • Review facility pre-list and prepare 31 day cards with the appropriate drug for the full fill.

  • Assists in monthly fulfills by delivering and exchanging medications to scheduled nursing home.

  • Assists in bagging drugs and place in proper area in warehouse to be delivered.

  • Must be able to work rotating schedules, evenings and weekends.

  • Other duties as assigned; job duties may vary by location.

Requirements Education, Qualifications & Skills
  • High School Diploma or GED.

  • Certification as a pharmacy technician preferred or required as state laws apply

  • Must learn abbreviations, brand and generic comparisons c., for interpreting prescriptions for filling.

  • Minor calculations regarding compounds and IV’s.

  • Knowledge of business English, spelling and commercial arithmetic.

  • Ability to interpret and follow oral and written instructions.

  • Ability to operate office machines which do not require special training other than skills which may be acquired on the job.

  • Ability to drive to facilities throughout the covered area.

  • Some overnight travel may be required.

  • Ability to write in a clear and legible manner.

  • Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the public.

  • One to two years Pharmacy experience preferred.
