Description The Dow Chemical Company has an exciting and challenging Research Specialist position available for an experienced PhD in our Chemical Sciences group.  This group is responsible for the discovery, development, and delivery of advantaged catalytic, synthetic, and polymer chemical technology for both new and existing Dow products.  For years, Dow has been exploring the use of high throughput screening techniques for the identification of new catalyst systems and considerable effort has been expended in the establishment of a corporate experimental High Throughput Research (HTR) capability within the Dow R&D community.

This Research Specialist role will be responsible for laboratory research in the general area of heterogeneous catalysis.  The position will focus on the synthesis, testing, and characterization of new catalytic materials for heterogeneous chemical processes.  Typical responsibilities include:
  • develop and maintain excellent knowledge of catalysis chemistry and chemical processes
  • apply technical skills and techniques for the preparation, characterization, and evaluation of heterogeneous catalytic materials
  • apply technical skills and techniques to determining the kinetic and mechanistic details of chemical reactions and processes
  • use innovative approaches to solve technical problems
  • work well both independently and on project teams
  • document work in a timely fashion in data books, Dow internal reports, patent disclosures, and external publications as appropriate
  • communicate results and progress to technical teams, supervision, management, and business leadership through oral presentations
Requirements

A PhD in Inorganic, Organometallic, Physical Chemistry, or Chemical Engineering (ChE with appropriate chemistry experience) is required for this role.  Prior experience with common analytical instruments and techniques such as TGA, DSC, SEM, XRD, XRF, Chemisorption, TPO, TPD, BET, ESR is required for this role, with other characterization methods (i.e. NMR, GC, HPLC, FT-IR, UV-VIS, and MS) is strongly desired.  In addition, experience with heterogeneous catalyst testing and high-throughput research techniques/technology is required.
