Description Job Summary:Weekends 8 hour shifts.The Nebraska Pharmacy Act of 1986, 71-1, 143, Section 8 defines the Pharmacy Technician as an individual employed to perform tasks not requiring professional judgment to assist in the preparation, compounding, distribution and dispensing of medications, including, but not limited to:  maintaining patient mediation records; setting up, packaging, and labeling medication doses; filling and dispensing routine orders for stock supplies; and mixing, labeling, and preparing drugs with parenteral fluids.The Pharmacy Technician works closely with the pharmacist in providing the aforementioned services.  Such responsibilities require administrative coordination and guidance to assure the work is completed and assistance is provided to pharmacists.
Essential Duties:
  • Sets up individual patient medication bins with single dose medications.  Consults the patient profile document for scheduled doses and time.  Chooses the correct strip-packaged tablet or capsule, prefilled vial, syringe or bottle, and places same in the patient's bin. 
  • Compounds sterile products (including TPN and chemotherapy) as ordered by the medical staff. Prepares labels and adds medications to intravenous fluids using aseptic technique, and maintains administration schedules.
  • Pre-packages tablets, capsules and liquids into single dose units.  Prepares labels with medication name, strength, form, lot number and expiration date.  The pre-packaging program supplements medications so purchased to provide single dose containers.
  • Dispatches medications to the patient and special care areas by pneumatic tube or hand carries same. Assists also in receiving orders, requisitions, and other materials by emptying tubes, etc. as needed.
  • Delivers controlled substances on a daily basis to replenish inventory levels.  Requires interpretation and judgment to assure accurate and practical inventory levels.
  • Checks and restocks patient care and special care stock supplies.  Specifics include floor stock, surgery and floor stock exchange trays.  Maintains the working stock of pharmacy medications and supplies.  Includes ordering medications, opening cartons, checking and marking medications that have been ordered from suppliers, and regular monitoring of inventory levels.
  • Manufacturers bulk solutions and repackages medications ensuring proper labeling, all under the immediate supervision of a pharmacist.
  • Maintains counter-tops, patient medication bins, transfer carts, and other areas clean according to in-house control procedures.  Assumes general and varied housekeeping duties.
  • Performs related work as required.
  • Assists the pharmacist in performing monthly floor stock inspections.
  • Processes credits in the unit dose area.
  • Performs drug transport duties including the daily unit dose cart exchange, IV solutions and other patient medication.
  • Fills daily floor stock requisitions from the floor.
  • Operates quality control program for IV admixture service.
  • Works with Material Service personnel in maintaining and updating Pharmacy suppliers requisition forms.
  • Is proficient at filling physician orders (Meditech generated) and routinely assists the pharmacist with this task.  Demonstrates performance without delegation.
  • Routinely performs distribution tasks:
  • Picks and delivers medications to Pyxis stations.
  • Is proficient at filling prescriptions on outpatient prescription system (QS/1) and routinely assists the pharmacists with this task.  Demonstrates performance without delegation.
  • Answers phone and responds to customer's need(s) within scope of practice.  Demonstrates good critical thinking skills.  Triages calls to pharmacist as needed.
Requirements Education:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of a Pharmacy Technician Certification Program & nationally certified preferred
Experience: 
  • No previous hospital pharmacy experience required.  Must be able to demonstrate and perform basic arithmetic calculations.  Technical tasks must be performed with minimal error tolerance.  Individual requires little supervision following specific and detailed instructions.  Performs repetitive distribution tasks while working under stable conditions.  Must be able to make minor decisions requiring non-professional judgment.  Able to operate a CRT.  Regular contacts with other departments requires courteousness and tact.

License/Certification: 

  • If not registered, must complete application for registration as a pharmacy technician in the state of Nebraska.
  • Board eligibility - If not nationally certified by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB), must apply for the national certification exam within 2 years.
