Position Overview:  The director of pharmacy is responsible for all drug storage and drug preparation in the hospital. The director of pharmacy ensures that the pharmacy provides optimal services, meets all legal, accreditation and certification requirements, and complies with all applicable policies, procedures, codes and standards of the hospital.

Responsibilities:  A. Ensures safe, appropriate, cost effective drug therapies for patients according to established policies, procedures and protocols.1. Develops, enforces and maintains policies and procedures that promote cost-effective, appropriate and safe drug use. 2. Develops and maintains a medical staff approved formulary.3. Supervises drug storage and preparation areas throughout the hospital.4. Provides for the educational needs of healthcare professionals and patients and their families.5. Ensures maintenance of an adequate drug supply. Ensures the integrity of the drug supply. Establishes specifications for the procurement of drugs, chemicals and biologicals.6. Ensures strict control and accountability for drugs dispensed to patients or distributed to floor stock. 7. Assures adequate control and documentation of controlled substances.B. Contributes to the quality and effective operation of the department.1. Supervises pharmacy personnel. Recruits, promotes, disciplines and terminates pharmacy staff. 2. Develops job descriptions and performance standards. Evaluates and counsels staff on their performance.3. Prepares work schedules and monitors workload statistics. Maintains an appropriate staffing level. 4. Provides for the educational needs of the pharmacy staff.5. Prepares a pharmacy budget annually. 6. Reviews monthly financial statistics and plans expenditures within budget guidelines. 7. Monitors and justifies all expenses exceeding budgeted targets.8. Ensures preparation and submission of patient charges and financial reports to administration in accordance with hospital policy.9. Administers reports, documents, payroll records, statistical surveys and other required data. 10. Ensures compliance with hospital policies and procedures that apply to pharmacy services. Ensures compliance with all applicable Federal, State and local laws, rules and regulations.C. Integrates the department into the organization’s primary functions.1. Develops and implements a strategic plan for the pharmacy that supports the mission and goals of the organization.2. Develops and implements pharmacy services in collaboration with associated department services.3. Develops, implements and maintains a program that improves the quality of pharmacy services and supports the quality improvement plan of the organization.4. Participates in all committees/functions required by the organization including the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee. 5. Establishes productive collaborative relationships with physicians, other hospital staff and within the community.D. Maintains competency required for current job title/position.1. Maintains current pharmacist license. Ensures applicable CE records and licensure are maintained in department files. Attends management meetings. Sustains professional competency and promotes development through participation in inservices, workshops, seminars and professional organizations.2. Completes all competency/skills assessment requirementsE. Perform staff pharmacist duties when needed.II. Departmental Standards 1. Is punctual and dependable; reports to work as scheduled. Fulfills on-call obligations per pre-arranged schedule. Absenteeism and tardiness are within policy guidelines. 2. Maintains a neat, professional, well-groomed appearance. Wears identification badge. 3. Performs work within specified time frames. Adapts positively to frequent interruptions and changes in workload and/or work schedule.4. Provides courteous, cooperative and timely service to patients, visitors and staff. Demonstrates good verbal and written communication.5. Works cooperatively with hospital and pharmacy staff. Voices concerns and suggestions to appropriate persons in a positive manner. Fosters a team environment.6. Demonstrates sound professional judgement consistent with clinical/academic background.7. Maintains strict confidentiality of patients, guests and employee information.8. Complies with all requirements related to risk management, safety, security, fire and infection control.9. Adheres to hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Complies with all applicable Federal and State laws, rules and regulations.III. Organizational Standards1. Requirements Graduate of an ACPE accredited School of Pharmacy with a BS Pharmacy degree or higher degree.Currently licensed to practice pharmacy in state of employment.Three to five years hospital training or equivalent training; one to two years in a management position or equivalent training; trained in general use of pharmacy computer systems; previous clinical experience; and advanced degree (pharmacy or business) is desirable.
