POSITION PURPOSE
The Manager of Spiritual Care is responsible for the day-to-day management and daily operations of the department of Spiritual Care. Furthermore, the manager is responsible for leading, organizing and implementing a comprehensive program of spiritual care for patients, families and staff, according to the “CHW Standards for Spiritual Care,” and “Mission Integration Standards,” all in a manner which is consistent with the Catholic Healthcare West (CHW) mission, vision and values.
NATURE AND SCOPE
Reporting Relationships
This position reports to the Vice President of Mission Integration.
Reporting to this position are the Chaplains, Chaplain Assistants, Clergy, Music Specialists, and Chaplain Volunteers/Eucharistic Ministers.
Position Scope
Spiritual Care Services works within an interdisciplinary team and assists in caring for the wholistic needs of the person. The department provides religious, spiritual, ethical, emotional support, and pastoral counseling for patients, their families and staff. Chaplains are also involved in advanced directives, bioethics concerns, end-of-life care process, i.e. palliative care, supportive comfort care pathways, and advocacy regarding patient rights issues and patient satisfaction.
Spiritual Care Service is also a resource for the outpatient services, which may encompass oncology centers, outpatient surgery centers, and other departments needing spiritual support.
This position collaborates in the spiritual development of the organization and works with the team focusing on Spirituality in the Workplace.

The incumbent will be responsible for collaborating with other facility managers for scheduling 24-hour, 7-day per week staff coverage at Mercy General, Mercy San Juan Medical Center, Mercy Hospital of Folsom, and Methodist Hospital/Bruceville Terrace.
Subordinate Positions
Chaplain: Provides spiritual care to patients, families, personnel and medical staff by assisting them to integrate the experience of illness, trauma, and loss with their own religious beliefs and convictions.
Chaplain Assistant: Provides spiritual pastoral support to patients, families, personnel and medical staff as assigned and directed.
Chaplain Volunteer: Performs patient contacts, makes referrals to professional chaplaincy staff. Assists with office work. Acts as a Eucharistic Minister. Prays with patients as appropriate. Provides the religious literature and as requested by patient / family.
Contracted Clergy: Available for pastoral counselling and sacramental ministry on-call and during scheduled periods.

External: Chaplaincy representative to a variety of religious congregations, community support groups and Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) training programs.

Requirements 1. Special Qualifications
This position requires a Roman Catholic chaplain, holding a master’s degree with advanced study in theology or spirituality and/or behavioral sciences. Clinical Pastoral Education trained with NACC or APC certification and a minimum of 2 years working as a hospital chaplain and 2 years in supervisory experience is required.

§ Ability to articulate and appreciate the CHW Mission and Values, the 'Ethical and Religious Directives of Catholic Healthcare Services' and the Christian spirituality of ministry and healing.
§ Principles and practices of effective supervision of subordinate personnel.
§ Medical moral theology and bioethics.
§ Ability to establish effective interpersonal communication and maintain professional working relationships when working with others, especially staff, patients, hospital and religious leaders.
§ Understanding of the integration of mind, body, spirit, and the healing process.
