Mercy San Juan’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit has long been a world leader for its strong clinical performance in caring for the smallest of newborns.
The most recent data from the Vermont Oxford Network shines an even brighter light on the healthcare professionals who make up the Level III NICU at Mercy San Juan Medical Center. Of the 485 participating NICUs from the United States and abroad that submit information to Vermont Oxford, Mercy San Juan is among the top 10 percent for survival without morbidity (illness) for babies weighing between one and three pounds.
The Vermont Oxford Network is a non-profit voluntary collaboration of health care professionals dedicated to improving the quality and safety of medical care for newborn infants and their families. Established in 1988, the Network gathers data from participating NICUs in the United States, Canada, Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.

The performance is a credit to a neonatal team that works closely together. The team members include neonatologists, registered nurses, respiratory therapists, developmental specialists, lactation consultants, dietitians and pharmacists. Seven neonatologists also work closely with a team of OB/GYNs and perinatologists. Our 26-bed NICU unit offers 12-hour shifts and professional development including NICU transport team, PICC-line training, HFOV classes, and Nitric Oxide training.

Mercy San Juan Medical Center, a member of Catholic Healthcare West and national winner of the Thomson Top 100 Hospitals for 2006 and 2007, is a not-for-profit, 260-bed facility and Level II Trauma Center located in Sacramento, California.
