Applications Engineer – production machining, machine tool, process development

We are looking for a Applications Engineer to support our clients production turning equipment. This position involves factory training on the specific models, features and capability of the machine tool line. Our client will consider experienced Applications Engineers or Manufacturing professionals with production machine tool turning process development experience. Candidates who have developed processes, specified / design special cutting tools on CNC or manual production turning machines will be considered. Past experience on one or more of the following turning machine tools will be considered:
- CNC lathes,
- twin spindle CNC lathes,
- Swiss CNC lathes,
- multiple spindle lathes,
- multiple spindle screw machines,
- rotary transfer machines,
- dial machines,
- cam driven screw machines
- production turning equipment.
The Applications Engineer will work from customer prints, select specific models of the machine and develop turn key process. Interested candidates will need knowledge of cutting tool geometry, feeds, speeds and the ability to calculate cycle times. Past experience selecting, designing or sketching special cutting tools to optimize processes is needed. CNC programming and CAD software experience is preferred. This position develops the order of operations, tooling package, special accessories, set up instructions and tool list. The Applications Engineer will interact with customers to discuss tolerances, cycle times and processes. The position also involves fielding customer calls to debug processing and tooling issues. The AE works with the Field Service Technicians, who set up, install and repair the equipment. This position involves some limited travel to customers providing their associates with training on the machine tool and process.
MUST HAVE: 5 plus years of processing and tooling production turning equipment. Strong knowledge of feeds, speeds, surface finishes, cycle time calculations, and cutting tool geometry is a must. Knowledge of tool design using CAD software and CNC programming is preferred. Past experience processing multi spindled CNC lathe and/or multi spindle turning and/or screw machine experience is strongly preferred. No degrees are required. Some past hands on is a plus.
