Job Description

JOB TITLE:             Power Electronics Engineer

DEPARTMENT:      Systems, Software, & Electrical Engineering

REPORTS TO:        Director – Systems, Software, & Electrical Engineering

LOCATION:             Chatsworth, California

 


GENERAL PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
: Provide technical expertise for the development of power electronics, inverters, magnetic components, power supplies, and energy storage systems.  Participate in the requirements, design, fabrication, and testing of electronic modules used to generate electrical power.

 


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Participate with systems engineering to complete requirements analysis
  • Document technical requirements for power electronics, inverters, magnetic components, power supplies, and energy storage systems
  • Participate with engineers and technicians to design and test the electronic subsystems necessary to provide output electrical power
  • Participate in and direct the fabrication and testing where applicable
  • Perform computer-aided design of electronics and control electronics subsystems plus the automatic and manual testing of these subsystems
  • Coordinate with and/or supervise appropriate personnel from Engineering and Manufacturing to assure the electronics and control subsystems meet specifications

 

Job Requirements

SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Demonstrated capability to design and test IGBT based 30kW ~200kW power inverters.  Familiarity of low power supply design is a plus.
  • Knowledge and experience on noise immunity power and control circuit design, troubleshoot and EMI filter design
  • Demonstrated skills with power electronics simulation tools such as PSIM Pro, Matlab/Simulink, and PSPICE.  Familiarity of Ansoft Finite Element tool is a plus.
  • Excellent background and experience of the design of magnetic devices, such as generators, inductors and transformers. 
  • Capability of real time programming and debugging with C and assembly is a plus.
  • Capability to understand and appreciate mechanical engineering, physical, thermodynamic, and chemical principles important to the design and operation
  • Demonstrated capability of schematic design and PCB layout.  Experience with OrCAD and PADs is preferred
  • Familiar with high speed digital circuit design with microprocessors and DSPs, especially the products from Microchip, TI and Motorola is preferred
  • Knowledge and experience with electronic component selection
  • Experience with HALT and HASS test is a plus
  • Familiarity of motor drives and power supply design and test environment is a plus
  • Demonstrated interpersonal abilities to participate positively within a design and production team involving numerous technical disciplines
  • Demonstrated leadership and communication skills, should be able to supervise junior engineers


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering (MS/PhD preferred) with 7+ years hands-on experience in designing and testing power electronic subsystems.
  • Specific experience in the design and testing of power electronics subsystems for electrical power generation.
