Job Description

We are seeking innovative Software Engineers to help shape our distributed processing platform that encompasses many terabytes of data and processes tens of thousands of transactions per second. An example of the projects you will work on as a Software Engineer with CareerBuilder involves the use of Solr to create an environment to cluster documents and retrieve high-level, meaningful information. We are creating a dashboard to display all CareerBuilder servers and their statuses that has the capability to bring a server in and out of the search technology environment. We also refactor search pools so that they use a shared control XML and take requests from other teams to add new fields, reflow documents and perform other technical tasks.

 Job Responsibilities
As a Software Engineer with CareerBuilder, you will determine and drive business value through iterative project methodology. You will also maintain and improve our search engine technology that supports many millions of searches each day.


Additional responsibilities of the Software Engineer include:

  • Modeling CareerBuilder business needs into our search platform
  • Innovating the next generation of our large, distributed, multi-lingual search platform
  • Collaborating with a partner on assigned projects
  • Providing on-call troubleshooting and customer care coverage
  • Refactoring code and making general improvements to the search technology
  • Participating in daily team meetings to discuss the previous day’s accomplishments, the goals of the coming work day and any roadblocks you may be experiencing

Job Requirements

As a Software Engineer with CareerBuilder, you must be a passionate self-starter who takes the initiative and does what needs to be done to complete a project. You must be willing to answer questions from customers, other Software Engineers and CareerBuilder staff in general and have the effective communication skills necessary to make yourself understood when speaking about complex technical subjects. You must also be a cooperative team player who delivers high-quality results both when working with a partner and individually.

Additional requirements for the Software Engineer include:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field or 1 year experience with object-oriented programming (OOP), Master’s degree a plus
  • Experience with Microsoft.NET Framework (C#, VB.NET and others) or Java and SQL (SQL Server, MySQL and others)
  • Ability to both multi-task and to dig deeply into one specific task based on project needs
  • Ability to think on your feet and problem-solve
  • Ability to support the search technology during off-hours on a rotating weekly basis
  • Previous search experience with Fast, Solr/Lucene, Autonomy, GSA, Endeca and others a plus
  • Previous experience with large, distributed website infrastructures and the Linux operating environment a plus
