Job Description

SUMMARY:

The Tool and Die Maker reports to the Engineering Maintenance department.  The Tool and Die Maker designs, develops and constructs highly intricate tools, dies, jibs, fixtures, and gauges where accurate relationship, fitting and interchange ability of parts require extremely close tolerances.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned.

*Devise special mechanisms to meet or obtain particular requirements; determine metal flow in dies, select allowances, perform difficult development work, make tool try-outs, diagnose and correct troubles, working independently toward ultimate objectives.

*Works from drawings, sketches, and instructions or from own conception.

*Reviews engineer drawings and recommend design changes as required.

*Visualize design, plan, and determine sequence of operations.

*Select materials, dimensional allowance for fits, tolerances, and material treatment methods.

*Perform machining operations requiring complicated and unusual set ups involving frequent improvising and adoption of tooling.

*Construct temporary fixtures, jigs; grind special purpose tools and improvise measuring devices to check components and assemblies.

*Perform critical hand and bench operations to construct and finish work involving polishing, fitting, timing and calibrating mechanisms.

*Set-up new or modified tooling and instruct machine operators on their use, care and operational methods.

*Ability to use various tools, equipment and materials of the trade.

*Must be able to operate CNC & wire EDM machines

*Supports production team and respond to requests.

*Maintain work area and equipment in a safe clean and orderly condition.

 



Job Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. 

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:  Requires the use of advanced shop mathematics and experience equivalent to a completed apprenticeship or equivalent to a two year technical college education. 

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS:  Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:  Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.  Ability to apply concepts of basic geometry and algebra.

 

REASONING ABILITY:  Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and talk or hear.  The employee is required to walk, reach with hands and arms, and climb or balance.  The employee is occasionally required to sit; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and taste or smell.  The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
