Job Summary:
The Sterile Processing Technician I is responsible for supporting the operations of the Sterile Processing Department. Candidates that are Central Service Technicians are preferable.
The Sterile Processing Technician I will participate in the activities/duties of the Department by :
Following policy and procedure for the inventory management, storage and distribution of sterile patient care supplies, instrumentation and equipment to the Clinics and Surgical areas.
Perform first level tasks in decontamination and assembly of instruments and preparation for sterilization.
Participates in the departmental patient safety and performance improvement initiatives.
Performs related duties as assigned.
Works collaboratively with peers to achieve department goals and organizations vision.
Conforms to standard procedures and methods used to store, distribute supplies and instrumentation within the applicable Federal, State and other regulatory agencies including JCAH.
Follows SUMC Safety and Infection Prevention policy and guidelines for self, patients, visitors and employees.
Participates in and complies with departmental and institutional regulatory requirements, policy and procedure pertaining to; quality control, quality assurance and preventive maintenance.
Actively participates in quality improvement issues with appropriate monitoring and documentation.
Demonstrates knowledge of surgical supplies and Case Cart assembly. Maintains patient confidentiality.
Assures the prudent use of resources and efficiently maintains inventory.
Prepares assigned shift work report of activity and apprises Lead Technician of issues and needs.
Manages information utilizing appropriate manual or electronic systems for shift work activity.
Reports any discrepancies or unusual activity to the Lead Technician.
Participates in Departmental Committees and Task Forces as requested.
Perform other work-related duties as assigned to support departmental functions.
Able to work in a fast paced environment with individuals of diverse cultural backgrounds.
Practices time management.
Maintains professional behavior and appearance.
Promotes a positive work environment by practicing good communication, diversity awareness and teamwork.
Maintains professional self-development by participating in educational opportunities available both internally and externally.
Qualifications:
High school graduate or equivalent required.
One year experience in Central Service, the Operating Room or a Patient Care Unit.
Must effectively be able to read, write and communicate to Hospital staff, physicians, the public and staff.
Must have the ability to follow policies and procedures regarding all aspects of an assignment including basic arithmetic and inventory calculations.
Willing to participate in on-going in services training and on the job training. Prefer competition of Central Service Technician Course.
Age Specific Requirements:
Neonate/infant (newborn to 2 years), Pediatric (2-11 years) and Adolescent (12-19 years).
Required Licenses/Certifications:
Central Service Technician Certification with current license is preferable.
Physical Requirements/Work Environment:

Able to lift up to 50lbs, push carts on wheels up to 75lbs, and has high manual dexterity.

Job Description Materials Management:
Ability to turn, lift, pushes and moves without restriction.
Must be flexible to change work assignments as directed.
Maybe work weekends, holidays and various shifts when necessary.
Able to work under close supervision.
Risk of Exposure to Blood Bourne Pathogens: Usual tasks do not involve exposure to blood, body fluids or tissues.
