Description

The Material Planner is responsible for the planning, procurement, and tracking of program material.  The Material Planner works with the Program team to implement the program ‘Make/Buy’ decisions including the material plan and work order planning within the Material Management System.

The Material Planner works closely with the Production Planner to establish material critical paths using the production schedule and scheduled material deliveries.  The Material Planner is responsible for ensuring work order material is available to support the production schedule.

The Material Planner works closely with Program Management in providing a material and production status that concisely shows critical path areas.  This requires periodic review of all work order material shortages and production schedule interruptions.

The Material Planner supports proposal efforts by developing Bills of Materials (BOM) and the organized quote books used to substantiate BOM costs.  The Material Planner develops the Operations planning data required as part of both the proposal and program start-up efforts.

The Operations planning data requires interfacing with other Operations functions such as Production Planning, Manufacturing Engineering, and Test Engineering to establish program baseline requirements needed to be performed by the Operations organization.   SNC job descriptions are meant as summarizations only.  They do not necessarily reflect all duties and responsibilities of a position.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Develops and maintains a detailed program status that concentrates on defining and statusing critical path items.  Creates the production work orders in the Material Management System based on the planned schedule provided by Production Control and the BOM configuration required to support the program ‘Make/Buy’ determination.   The Material Planner is responsible for fully planning all work orders and material requirements during the production start-up phase of the program.

The Material Planner prepares the purchase requisitions and time- phased release of requirements to obtain materials, tools and equipment to support the production schedule. Works with program team members to address problems, providing scheduling alternatives and workarounds including rework schedules.

Ensures all material is on-hand to support the productions schedule and highlights material shortages or delivery dates that do not support the production schedule as critical path items.  Inputs and maintains Engineering Parts Lists in Materials Management System.    Validates all required program parts lists in Materials Management System at the start-up phase to ensure agreement with released engineering data.

Reviews ECOs to determine the correct material status for the drawing changes.  Implements any procurement changes required as part of the ECO.  Punctuality to work each day and prepared to work scheduled work hours

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Performs special projects and other duties as assigned by management.

Requirements

 

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: 

 

  • BS/BA degree in related field or an equivalent technical understanding of Planning earned through related experience. 
  • Five years experience in the manufacturing environment (preferably government contracting) and strong knowledge of production and material control processes.
  • APICS certification is preferred.



SKILLS REQUIRED:

 

  • Computer proficiency in MS Excel or MS Access is required.  Experience in MS Project, MS PowerPoint and Visio is desired.  Experience with a MRP II production scheduling system or MRP I material management software is preferred.
  • Excellent communication, problem solving, interpersonal and decision-making skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Possess the ability to handle multiple tasks with frequent interruptions.
