Description Telecommunication and Network Services (TNS), a department of Information Technology Services, will be filling a position for a Network Communications Engineer Level I, (PC4106, pay grade 06) within the Infrastructure Services (IS) workgroup. This workgroup is responsible for the physical communications infrastructure on campus which includes the communication spaces, pathways, and cabling; the design and construction; and the implementation and maintenance of the cable plant and connections. This position is responsible for coordination and installation of communication infrastructure, maintenance and support for all voice, data, and video services on campus. This position is NOT focused on server and client administration, programming, or network configurations. This position does require regularly scheduled on-call and after-hours support. Key duties and responsibilities include: • Field installation of copper, optical fiber, coax cable, AV equipment, cameras and network equipment, including uninterruptible power supply (UPS). • Field termination of copper, coax, and cable testing. • Respond to voice, data and video communications trouble tickets, including events reported by monitoring systems. • Inspect telecommunication closets for adherence to campus standards, including electrical and temperature. Assist in developing and implementing a closet annual maintenance strategy. • Assist with field installation of data network equipment. • Use common test equipment to monitor and test copper and optical fiber cable plant. • Pursue continuing education for professional and skill development. • Share regularly scheduled on-call and after-hours support. Requirements Basic qualifications include: • Bachelor’s Degree in a related field and experience (typically 0- 2 years) or equivalent combination of related education and experience. • Experience and knowledge in construction, operation, and/or support of communications infrastructure and an understanding of the associated standards. • Knowledge of and familiarity with industry TIA/EIA communications infrastructure standards and their application. • Strong analytical and problem solving skills, be systematic, technically curious and self-motivated. • Skilled and comfortable using personal computers and common productivity suite software and common applications (e.g., MS Word, MS Excel, email, on-line calendar, etc.). • Have good interpersonal skills and strong customer service and customer relations skills. • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to write and deliver clear and concise instructions, reports and work summaries. • Must be able to meet the University of Iowa’s Fleet Safety requirements (see website for info). www.uiowa.edu/~our/opmanual/v/19.htm#195 Desirable additional qualifications include: • Knowledge of and experience with OTDR, power meter and fusion splicing equipment. • Familiarity with internet protocol (IP addressing and IP networks). • Knowledge of and experience with installation and programming of A/V equipment.
