ANNOUNCES AN OPENING FOR
AUDIOLOGIST
PART-TIME, 21 HRS/WEEK
The American School for the Deaf (ASD) is located on a 54 acre campus in West Hartford, Connecticut. It is a residential and day program operating as a state-aided private school. It was established in 1817 as the first permanent school for the deaf in America. The current service load is approximately 215. The program is a comprehensive center-based and community-based educational program serving deaf and hard-of-hearing students from preschool through high school, and adult service program, utilizing a total communication philosophy. The American School for the Deaf is accredited by the Conference of Educational Administrators of Schools and Programs Serving the Deaf, the Departments of Education in Connecticut and Massachusetts, and The Rehabilitation Accreditation Commission (CARF).
SCOPE OF DUTIES
Under the direction of the department coordinator, performs responsible work in identifying, appraising, and interpreting communication disorders of hearing; performs habilitative and rehabilitative programming, including hearing aid recommendations and evaluations and auditory training; and performs related work as required.
PRIMARY DUTIES
a.) Performs audiological evaluations, writes narrative reports, and interprets test results for client/parents/staff.
b.) Conducts hearing aid evaluations, makes recommendations regarding appropriate amplification, keeps accurate records and completes necessary forms.
c.) Fabricates earmolds and maintains appropriate records.
d.) Maintains contact with manufacturers of audiological/amplification equipment to ensure knowledge of current practices and products.
e.) Assists in developing and implementing training/professional development for staff/parents.
f.) Serves as a resource person to staff and parents in relation to audiology.
g.) Networks with staff, consultants, and outside agencies on related issues.
h.) May assist with designing programs and/or models on service provision for children with cochlear implants.
i.) May provide aural habilitation to include developing, implementing, and evaluating I.E.P’s
j.) May manage school wide FM system to meet the individual amplification needs of the client.
k.) May provide audiological outreach services to educational programs serving hearing impaired clients including staff in service, audiometric testing, and audiological management.
l.) Other duties as assigned.
SALARY AND BENEFITS
(a) Compensation range is determined by union contract, based on education, certification and experience on a ten-month basis.
(b) Retirement, group health insurance, and other fringe benefits are available.

Requirements
Applicants must possess a minimum of a Master’s Degree from a recognized college or university with appropriate coursework in audiology. They must possess or be eligible to obtain a Certificate of Clinical Competency from the American Speech and Hearing Association and a State of Connecticut Department of Public Health License in Audiology pending completion of all required professional experience. Consideration will be given to all applicants who have completed all requirements with the exception of the Clinical Fellowship.
Applicants must have considerable knowledge of audiology methods and techniques used in the diagnosis and treatment of communication disorders of hearing which may also involve speech, language, and other disorders. Applicants must have an operating knowledge of audiometric instruments. Additional abilities include: working with children and adults; interpersonal skills; organizational and record keeping skills; and written communication skills.
Applicants must have or be willing to learn sign language skills. SCPI rating of Intermediate or better preferred. Previous experience with deaf individuals is preferred. Flexible work schedule may be required.
