Correctional medicine has many benefits that are often overlooked by Physician unfamiliar with this type of medical practice. Medical care in our system works much like it does everywhere else with some differences. Correctional medicine is comprised primarily of internal medicine patients with a public service/community health service flavor. Care competencies include: asthma, hypertension, seizures, diabetes and infectious disease: including TB and HIV. Care provided is somewhat procedure oriented and will include lacerations and wound care, minor procedures and general infectious disease. Inmates tend to have the same kinds of problems related to incarceration no matter where they are locked up. They also bring certain constellations of problems with them, since there is a high concentration of drug users that get into trouble with the law. They bring resultant diseases like liver and kidney disease, sexually transmitted disease and history of traumatic injuries and the results of these conditions. There is a great opportunity for health education and coaching.
Physicians working in correctional medicine typically perform histories and physicals, evaluates and treats inmates at the daily sick call, follow up medical call-outs and emergency visits by inmates, performs minor surgical procedures including, but not limited to, suturing lacerations, I & D biopsy of skin lesions, treatment of burns, wound care and debridement, nail removal, local anesthesia administration.
